: Help choosing a stereo for my Tundra... HackSack 10-11-2003, 01:01 PM I'm getting either a 2000 or a 2001 Tundra Access Cab very soon. The first thing I want to do is get a stereo for it. Now, first of all, I do NOT know very much about car audio. I am on a budget, but I can't exactly give you guys a price range because I really don't know how much it costs for a complete system.
I am relatively sure I want either 2 10's or 2 12's. I would prefer not to sacrifice rear passenger comfort/room, and I most definately don't want to remove the rear seats. For the head unit, I would like to be able to play mp3 cd's, and a flip out LCD would be really cool for dvd's or something. How hard is it to hook up an Xbox?
I really can't tell you guys much else, because I don't really know that much and I guess I don't really know exactly what I want. Can you guys help educate me? I am not a stereo 'aficionado' (sp.), I just want a nice sounding stereo for a decent amount of money. And powerful bass. I listen to mostly rap music if that changes anything.
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. uracowman 10-11-2003, 02:59 PM I'm getting either a 2000 or a 2001 Tundra Access Cab very soon. The first thing I want to do is get a stereo for it. its very hard to tell you what to get without a price range.10 and 12 inch subwoofers can run from as low as 50 dollars up to a couple hundred apiece.its also hard to put subs in a tundra without taking moving those seats but at the tundra store, jnespappa has made some good quality 10 inch boxes that take out your storage compartments under the seats. Also flip out lcd screens are atleast 700 apiece for decents ones.If you want top of the line, get a eclipse flip out.but yet again its hard to tell what you want without a price range. Justin534 10-12-2003, 12:05 PM I say give us your price range and we will give you all our personal opinions :).
Also if you plan on putting in 2-10" subs you are definitely going to be sacrificing passenger comfort; 2-12" and there wont be much space for anything in the rear of the cab. Do you want it stealth (hidden from view)? Do you have a center console or bench seat? If the answer to both of those is yes then check out the JL steal box. Mine is hidden under the rear seat in a custom box, check out my photos to see it. Also JnEsPappa has a nice baffle for 1-10" sub under the rear seat. If you know someone with a tundra and a nice setup you will notice how hard 1 good 10" sub can hit. Plan on paying a bit of a premium, but it's well worth it. Agent WD-40 10-12-2003, 01:23 PM 2 10's hidden from view and not taking up passenger space is possible. I don't think 12's are though. For one of them you can put it in the rear steat storage compartment like Justin534 did. For the other one you can get the JL Audio StealthBox that puts a 10 in the center console. You can only use the Stealthbox if you have the captin chairs. The bench seat doesn't come with the center console so the stealthbox wont fit. You can search for pictures of people that have these thing so you get an idea.
As for price, the stealthbox will run from $400-500 depending on where you get it. $500 is the MSRP on it and JL says the lowest price they can advertise is $475. I doubt your going to get a price quote of lower than $475 on the phone. If you go into the shop you can probably talk most places down to about $415 or so. The dealers pay $350 for it, plus they pay for shipping to their shop. So you have to leave a reasonable profit for them. You can always check the Personal Classifieds on this site and eBay to see if any come up used.
For the sub in the rear seat area the cost will be the the cost of the sub you use back there and the cost of materials to seal it and make a mounting plate for the sub. JnEsPappa has a nice pre-made mounting plate you can get in the TS store.
You also need to consider that you need an amp for your subs. They vary in price you can just look around. The TS store sells some amps. www.cbrstereo.com has good prices too. The amps will need wiring kits, which you can also find in the TS store for a good price.
That is what you will need to do just your 2 subs. You can get the subs and use the factory head unit still. If you are on a budget I would do the head unit last. You can use the factory head unit and get great sound quality out of it. I did, until it broke. The Alpine HU I replaced the stock one with sounds exactly as my stock one did.
If your going to upgrade your door speakers pick some and get an external amp for them. They will play much louder and cleaner than they will off of any amp built into a head unit. Save the money that you would spend on a new head unit and do this.
If you do the work yourself you will save a lot of money. If not you need to consider the cost to install all of your equiptment. You should also consider sound deadening your truck. It will keep it quieter and keep the rattles away. You can get enough sound deadening material to do the whole truck for about $140 or so. There is a LONG thread about sound deadening in around here. You will learn a lot if you read it. Tundra Kid 10-12-2003, 05:44 PM First of all, I want to start off and say that I work for one of the South's largest Car-Audio dealers. I can tell you right now that your HU is your center piece and most important. Don't go with anything else but Eclipse / Alpine as far as that goes. However, some of the high end Eclipse's will not play MP3's, the Alpine will. I usually recommend to my customers the Alpine 9815, it's an incredible unit. For door speakers go with the Boston 6.5 Pro's. They are one of the cleanest sounding set of seperates you can possibly go with. As far as amplifiers go, JL Audio makes the best amplifiers, period. For your seperates / door speakers you should go with the 300/4 and for your one or two subs you should go with the 250/1 or 500/1. All depends on how much base your looking for. The 250/1 will be alittle better for you as far as space goes too. When you get into the JL stealthbox's I believe there's a 4ohm 10w3 inside there. If that's the case and you want to put two 10" woofers in the truck, then make sure you put another 10w3 in the enclosure in the rear, however I do not know if the enclosure's that Jensappa (sp) makes will allow the depth needed for a 10w3. Now, you don't have to do everything exactly like this. Just a little advice and maybe a little direction for you. Just remember this much:
1. Alpine / Eclipse WILL give you the best sound over any unit (no matter how expensive and cool looking the 800$ Sony is, it still sounds better)
2. Boston Acoustics / MB Quartz make some of the best components there are.
3. JL Audio make the best subwoofers and amplifiers.
4. If you need a capacitor, go with Stinger.
Remember those things and you'll be just fine. HackSack 10-13-2003, 07:21 AM Thanks a LOT guys for the help. About the sound deadening though, I've seen the thread where somebody ripped apart their entire truck...is that really necessary? How much would you reccomend I do?

uh you still need to give us a price range.Things like the jl audio is top of the line and will cost you a couple thousand dollars. And yea a good way to deaden is that toyotas tend to vibrate alot,so you could go to a local hardware store and get some of that liquid set foam and pull off the door panel and spray it in there.its well worth doing if you plan to play you music loud. The vibration gets annoying. I've got the setup that Agent's talking about. One 10 in the JL stealthbox and one 10 in the JnEsPappa baffle under the rear passenger seat. One monoblock amp under the front passenger seat drives both subs and a 4 channel amp under the driver seat pushes the components in the doors and the comps in the kick panels. Don't worry if you don't get it exactly right the first time. Most of us who love car audio have changed our setups multiple times. Have fun with your install progression and keep asking questions. uracowman 10-13-2003, 08:41 AM I've got the setup that Agent's talking about. yea okc is right. My 1st system was 4 10 inch mtx thunder 4000 subs in boxes with my back seats taken out with 2 el2150 bazooka amps. Now i'm trading that in for 2 15 inch kicker L7 subs. Yeah, it is a lot of work to do the whole truck. You don't have to rip the whole thing apart. I would suggest you do at least the doors though. You will have to take the panels off to install the speakers so you might as well do it at the same time. If you don't want to do the entire truck floor and such that isn't the biggest deal. But at least do the doors while they are apart. If you ever get the itch to do it later you will wish you did it the first time. JnEsPappa 10-14-2003, 09:37 AM Thanks a LOT guys for the help. Here's and idea. After you purchase and have all of your stereo stuff in hand, wait for a Friday night and GUT the truck. Seats, door panels and carpet. It sounds scary but you could end up doing it just once.
Sat. AM:
-Sound deaden doors, floor and rear wall
Sat. Lunch:
-Run power, ground and RCA's
-Install door speakers with crossovers inside door panels (wrapped in plastic). I recommend installing the speakers first so you can connect them to the OEM H/U and make sure they are wired correctly
Sun. AM:
-Install H/U
-Install Amps
Sun. Luch:
-seal rear compartment (skip if using stealthbox or QLogic)
-Install sub...
...and as evening sets in, put the carpet, seats and door panels back in. It's ambitious, but could be done all in one fell swoop.
Round up one of your good buddies, and buy him some pizza and a promise of bottomless beer on Sunday night. Stand back and watch him work. :D | |
