So I am currently replacing my driver side boot in a 2002 2wd as it has a tear in it at the bottom, probably from driving thru brush. The bottom side of it is coated in the black grease. I can hear clicking from it. The sound is outside and doesnot transmit thru to the cab. I hear it most easily when I am in a drive thru line next to a wall. It clicks constantly while moving, probably with a half tire rotation (maybe a full rotation). I can barely hear it with the windows down at slow speeds if I am listening for it.

My Q's are:

I bought Valvoline's "Dura Blend" for japanese vehicles. It is a Moly fortified synthetic blend grease. It says it is intended for disc brake wheel bearings - chassis - suspension - universal joints - and CV joints. I originally thought it was fully sythetic until I typed up this post. Is this the correct type, or do I need full-sythetic? I read in the other two similar posts that regualr grease will cause the boots to swell. I believe Mobile1 had some grease that was clearly labeled as fully synthetic.

How much grease is needed in the boot? Half full, completely full without bulging, or some other amount?

I will be checking here periodically, as I will be currently putting the truck on jack stands and taking the tire off. If anyone chimes in soon, it is not too late for me to get the truck rolling back to pick up the full synthetic.

I appreciate in advance any responses.

I thought the bellows are just there to protect the rack seals and shouldn't be packed with grease. I don't see how the speed-related clicking could be coming from the rack either.

So it is leaking PS Fluid (ATF). I guess that means the inner seal is torn too...

Thanks Johnny 5! I confirmed with Toyota, that the boot is not full of grease. So I will just replace the main seal, lube it up with silicone spray, then spray the inside and out of the replacement boot. I am going to order the 303 silicone spray, maybe I will wait for that before I attempt this install. Supposedly there is no better silicone spray.
