I am not confident that Toyota's brake fluid is of sufficiently low moisture absorption, compared with say Castrol LMA. Let me explain why I think so. Earlier this year at 80,000 miles/6yrs old in mild/low salt west coast environment, I experienced front brake caliper seizure, requiring major re-build of all calipers (essentially the only problem I have ever had with this great vehicle). The Toyota brake fluid had been renewed 2.5yrs previously. Normally I flush & replace at 1-2yr intervals, but I had unintentionally gone a bit over. Corrosion due to fluid deterioration and moisture absorption was the prime suspect. I find this sub-standard. This was a dealer well-maintained vehicle, with all recommendations followed. Now only 10 months after the calipers re-build by the dealer, I am getting intermittent partial seizure of the left front caliper again.

By comparison, my previous Camry went to 15yrs old and 250,000 miles before I sold it, still on the original hydraulic system. I had used Castrol LMA (low moisture absorption) brake fluid for most of its life, replaced at 1-2yr intervals.

I am due to have the master cylinder seal replaced under the recall, though vehicle has experienced no leakage.

My research has indicated that Castrol LMA, or ATE (used by VW & BMW) TYP 200, or ATE SL.6 (low viscosity for ABS brakes), all meeting the usual industry standards for brake fluids but claiming exceptionally low moisture absorption, might be better choices than the Toyota fluid. Comments anyone?

I ONLY trusted Valvoline SynPower Brake Fluids (I loved this stuff but has been discontinued). I can live with Castrol LMA.

Castrol LMA is readily available in auto stores, at the end of the day to save the master, calipers, rotors, lines etc u need fresh fluid, 2y/3y replacement sch is what will make the brake components last longer.
