The third member is the unit that sticks out of the axle and connects to the driveshaft. This member contains the ring and pinon and the differential. NOW... The reason they probably give you the entire third member instead of just the LSD is that you can simply install it right into the axle. If you wanted to put just the LSD in you would need to re-shim the entire assembly as well as torque down the ring, and that would be a real bear.

I personally am thinking about a powertrax locker, 'cause I don't think a LSD of any kind will be as useful FOR ME...

You're talking about the same thing, more or less, when you say "third member" or "differential". I believe that technically, the "third member" involves the ring and pinion gear inside the differential housing (your "pumpkin").

Anyway, the point is, the LSD (Limited Slip Differential) is a unit that is added to the inside of the "pumpkin" (inside the differential housing), and normally has a series of clutches that will transfer the power from the rear drive wheel (on the passenger side) to the opposite wheel (the wheel behind the driver) when the drive wheel starts slipping. There are some threads in this forum that will lead you to the TRD website, which will show you what their after-market LSD looks like. It will be a great addition to your truck.

ok lets see if im getting this now...the third member houses the diff and connects to the the drive line correct? while the diff is just the clutch and spider gears correct? hopefully thats closer, but if someone can really set me straight that would be great. why would you want a whole new third member anyways? why not just get the new diff? thanks for the help guys...

maybe im not quite getting it. whats the difference between the third member and the lsd? before the dealership's answer about the diff i hadnt heard that phrase before, mostly because i dont have much experience with it and also because ive always used slang for stuff, like pumpkin for the diff and things like that...

RM.....this may seem a little bit hokey, but it will help you to some degree. I did this on my first Toyota truck (a 1978 longbed) because I took it out on dirt roads and had trouble going uphill on the hard washed out sections.

Trucks just naturally have a traction problem because there simply is no weight over the drive wheel pushing down on it when it starts to spin. It's definitely just the nature of the beast. What I did was to put two 25# shot bags (lead birdshot, you can get it at about any store that sells ammunition or guns....Walmart might even have it) right behind the right rear wheel well inside the bed of the truck. That helped a whole bunch, believe it or not. I would probably put 3 bags in the Tundra as the springs and shocks are sturdier than my old longbed. Anyway, use whatever you want (sandbags, whatever). I just found that the shotbags did the trick for me.

BVS was $1050 the final price you paid or 1050-477=$575? Is the non-TRD (Hino unit that is available on the 2002s) also available as a complete 3rd member? and would you get any credit for your core?

Just a Note to all

The unit on http://www.drivetrain.com/TRD.html
is just the LSD, not the whole 3rd member.

If you buy it from TRD you get a whole new 3rd member. (you must send the core back to TRD for a refund) That's why there is a price difference.

I had The Dealer Install my TRD LSD $1050.00 total.
with core exchange. (I got $477.00 back for my core)

I've never had a traction problem since.

Even on black ice (in 4wd) i've got 3 wheels spinning

It happened again. Making a right turn from a stop, small puddle under right tire, zero traction. I almost got rear ended. Can the LSD installers refresh me on how much and how difficult the install was. Thanks.
