Yes ring gear has to be removed. Unless, you are regearing and replacing the carrier anyways. What kind of locker are you installing?

The tundra (1gen) rear end is the same as most tacomas. It's an 8.4" (aka 210mm) rear end. Precision Gear's master install kit is here: Precision Gear - Toyota 8" Tacoma Rear (210mm) Ring and Pinion Gear Sets (http://precisiongear.com/toy8t.htm)

I installed my detroit locker with 4.88's and replaced all bearings. The shims is not like dana axle installs. The shims are one piece where the dana axles you have a bunch of different thicknesses. So, you'll need to press off the old bearings from the carrier to use the shim that's on there as a starting point. As well as on pinion. Hopelly, the existing shims will provide the correct pattern and backlash needed. Otherwise, you'll be needing to use the shim in the kit or find a local shop that has toyota carrier and ring&pinion shims....
