Ok, what is the most miles on your original tranny? I would like to know a rough idea on how many miles i can get out of my 2001 tundra. I have 290,000 miles on it. All i have done to it is drop the tranny pan and refill with mobil 1. I am starting to worry a little becasue it does not shift as good as it use to, especially into the last gear @ 55-60 mph. I was also wondering if the Auto RX would help it, or not. Or is it time to get a new trany or a new tundra?? thanks:ballchain:

270,000 mi and counting, still running fine.

When you dropped the pan did you clean the screen ?

The shift solenoids and pressure regulator solenoid do eventually wear out (or get contaminated) so you may need to replace them. As long as you are not seeing any large amounts of clutch material in the pan or oil your clutch packs should be o.k. You might want to invest in new solenoids.

Your shifting is controlled by the TPS ( sensor on the side of the throttle body ). If your throttle body is getting carboned up it will throw off the TPS somewhat and change the shifting. Perhaps do a cleaning first, pull the battery power for a few minutes and see what change it makes.

buddy. thanks for replying back.. great to hear someone else with miles so close to mine. I am not that mechanically inclinded to mess with the tranny. but yes, i did clean the screen when i dropped the pan.

Lately (maybe i am now a little paranoid) but when i hit the highway it seems that the trany is having a hard time to get in the last gear @55-60 mph. truck has 291,000 miles on it. unless you could show me a picture of what it looks like with the pan dropped to replace something simple i dont want to cross that line on the trany.

one last question. if my truck has 291,000 miles and if it is worth @ $6500 dollars, and lets say a new or rebuilt trany is $2500 to $3000. would it be a better idea to buy a new tundra and start over & keep it 10 years or more also? thank you.:beatsme:

OK. how about using the AUTO RX. would that help or fix the shifting and Flush again with Mobil1 ATF?

did some reading , yes i have recently did some cleaning of the throtle body and the butterfly thing. but did not know about the throtle body sensor. Would the sensor mess with the shifting?

The TPS sensor does not require cleaning, best not to mess with it at all.

I have never used any additives I just change the fluid every 30,000 or so and have been using Castrol Dexron VI for a year and a half ( ever since they dropped their synthetic tranny line). You may want to try a treatment, perhaps someone can chime in with a suggestion that has worked. You need to be careful as some additives can caot the clutches and cause slippage ( which will eventually go away after a few fluid changes). Otherwise it may be time to simply change a few solenoids or do a valve body service (considering the clutches are still fine). You may not need a full rebuild as some shops may suggest. I have seen too many full tranny jobs done over a bad solenoid(s). You also may want to get a few opinions from a few tranny shops and see if there is a common answer that makes sense. It should be noted that I am not against transmission shops in general as there are some very honest ones out there. However like any industry there are a few bad apples that can cause caution.

When it comes to spending money to fix a truck or buy a new one ? Forget the market value, and ask yourself what it is worth to you ? I love my 1st gen and will not part with it, but that doesn't mean I won't get a new one as well. With the condition of my truck I can justify putting money into it ( when the time comes ) to keep it running great. For the age and number of miles, and that is all most look for the value and not the actual condition, it is not worth me "giving it away".

If you can get OEM solenoids for cheap like $300, it is a good investment if you are dropping the pan. Get new magnets and Castrol Import MV ATF and it will make the tranny happy!!!
