Hi
I am new to this site and wow a lot of great info and some sweet rides. It's nice to be here.
Thanks in advance.

I bought my 2001 2wd 4.7L sr5 access cab Tundra with 70K on it. The truck was in good shape then and now with 130k still good. However, the front brake pads have always rattled.
The first time i had the brakes done, the shop said they were fine and they did not know what the rattle was after turning the rotors and installing new pads.
I am reasonably sure its the front pads rattling, when i barely press on the brake pedal the noise stops.
It's annoying at the least, I just put on new front pads, didn't turn the rotors they were turned last time and they have no grooves and appear flat with a small straight edge.
But i am not a mechanic and I could be in the wrong here by not turning them.
I just couldn't afford $350 for a front brake job.
Next time i'll remove em and get em turned.
Any way I am thinking i need the shim kit, I didn't take any shims off when replacing the pads and i replaced the retaining springs.
Well it's always rattled, and still rattles.
Any thoughts.
Thanks
Vinnie

You didn't say whose pads you put on...

If you used Toyota pads, you should get the shim kit. It has two shims per pad.
Other pads may only use one shim per pad.

You should also check to see if the person who did the brakes installed the anti-rattle springs. There would be at least one for each wheel up front.

If you have uneven wear on the pads, you could have a cailper sticking open.

In theory, this should be an easy fix for you.

Hey thanks I was sort of heading in that direction, The pads are off the shelf generic for Tundra. They fit, but I am going to get the shim kit.
Thanks for answering.
