Wife and I bought the 2003 new, now has 86K miles. It is an SR5, fully loaded in 2003 with 17" wheels, sunroof, 3rd row seats, basically all Limited features except leather seats, leather steering wheel and lighted sunvisor mirrors. We like cloth anyway. Have had NO problems except the usual ball joint and oil pressure sender recall. All I've done is oil, brake pads, tires, and a battery. The light in D does not work, so what. If kept, going in soon for timing belt, water pump, tensioner.
Thinking about a 2012 because of the 5.7 and 6 speed auto. Want to stay with SR5 vs Limited or Plat because seats are cloth. Do not want leather, nor 2nd row buckets. It appears there is an air injection issue in the 5.7, and the "fold flat" 3rd row seats take up vertical height. My 3rd row seats were taken out the 2nd week of ownership. I have not seen enough "features" in the Limited to change the leather to cloth.
What other "issues/changes" have you TS'ers seen?
Thanks in advance

I probably wouldn't go for it unless you no longer like your 2003 Sequoia. I also wouldn't worry about the timing belt and tensioner, I didn't change mine at 90k, I ended up doing it at 180k. It probably could of kept going.
As for problems, overall quality is not the same as the first gen Sequoia. Yes, power is up, but so is the price and the cost cutting or cheapness.
For example, as for quality and details, look down at your seat anchors, they are covered up with plastic black covers on your 2003, on the 2005-07 and the 2nd gen the cost cut those out and left exposed seat anchors and bolts....there are whole bunch of others that went cheapo on the 2nd gen included painted dash, hard plastic, ill-fitting panels and more.
Also, those little painted arrows on the seats control are gone.
Also, things like double stitched leather are gone as well. The little details have been taken out.
What about the lock for the gas tank?...Gone!
I'd wait till the next gen to see if quality gets better.

I was thinking about that today what is the chance to switch between 1st and 2nd generation. Count all points and would like to stay with 1st generation Sequoia. The second one is kind of chubby. I don't really like the look, unless you like do extra things which is lifting, aggressive tires, cosmetic thing. I like the look as it was born. My opinion.

I just ordered my 2012 Platinum black with red rock interior. Replacing my 2009 Platinum. I love the color combo, the leather, the 2nd row buckets, the fold flat 3rd row, the power and the styling. So I guess I like everything you aren't sure about.:)
The 2nd generation Sequoia is the best SUV I personally have owned. Did Expeditions and Yukons previously. Never had the first generation Sequoia so I can't comment but it sounds like it was a great truck as well.

I just traded in my mint 2004 for a 2012. For me, it was mostly two reasons:
1. I needed the power to tow my camper
2. I needed the ability for kids to easily get to the third row. I have a couple of little kids so will need it for a while.
Like some others here, I did not care for the new body style either. I also agree with the previous comment about cost cutting too. My second and third row seats only have leather on the front and one outer side.
