can you use airbags and a wdh together

Yes you can. But you have to be careful how you set them up. If you set the WDH up without air in the bags and then air up the bags, the WDH will no longer work properly. The airbags will lift the rear of the truck and essentially unload the WDH.

I ran with both for for the past 6 years. I set the WDH up to work properly when the bed of the truck was empty. I measured the wheel well heights under these conditions. With this setup, I had 3/4" sag on the rear axle with a fully loaded trailer and no sag on the front axle. This indicated a properly set up WDH.

But when I went camping, the bed of the truck usually filled up quickly which added an additional 900 lbs of cargo. This resulted in an additional 1.5" of sag in the rear even with the WDH engaged. So I put 25 psi in the airbags and returned the rear axle to the desired 3/4" of sag. Any more and the WDH would have been unloaded.

Did I need the airbags? No. Did they help? Maybe, maybe not, They certainly returned the truck to the more level condition. But I could have done that by adjusting the WDH a little. Although that isn't what the WDH is meant for, a little extra tension on the bars won't break them. I did feel the airbags added a bit of the cadillac bounding to the suspension. Nothing terrible, just noticeable.

My recommendation: use the WDH to distribute hitch weight, use the airbags to counter the cargo in the truck. Or skip the airbags altogether.

Tom

Very well put Tom. I use them exactly as described, a little fire wood and what not they really help out. Here is a couple pics of my setup. Good luck

I have Firestone airbags for ten years on my Tundra and all I have to do is put a little air in them once in a while. They work great as my trailer does not allow for a WDH. It did take me about four hours to put them on.

They level the truck with my trailer and when I have a heavy load in the bed. They work great, especially while towing. They do stiffen the ride a little unloaded.
