: Has anyone actually broken anything or gotten into an accident towing?

I have almost 90,000 miles on my 2008 Tundra and have been towing about 9000 pounds about 20 weekends a year on 600 mile (round trip hauls) and countless times for short 5-20 mile trips. I am just wondering, has anyone actually had a part failure or accident from the result of overloading the Tundra or using it within its limitations, but frequently? Honestly, I would love to go buy a new 1 ton dually diesel but I just cant justify it since I don't need to tow anything over 9-10,000 pounds and the truck has performed flawlessly. I was just using it yesterday to tow a bunch of house crap over to my new place and was thinking, "wow, this thing still feels just as tight as the day I bought it and pulls phenomenally".

So, has anyone actually snapped an axle, broken some suspension components or god forbid gotten into any kind of accident while towing that might have been related to being at the limits of the ratings? I sincerely hope the answer to the last question is no, but I would like to know. There is always a lot of talk about people pushing limits when towing and the potential repercussions, but I would like to know if anyone has any actual first hand knowledge of issues I mentioned.

Cheers.

I guy I know has just related a story to me of an '09 or '10 Tundra towing 9K+ with #1000 on the hitch and a Toyota equalizer too.
He says it was wet on both occasions when he had to brake hard for a light and the Tundra acted as if there were no brakes.
He had some other details but that is basically it.
Has any one experienced a deal where you would swear you were on ice when you went for the brakes?

Sounds like to way much tongue weight. He unloaded his front axle, which is designed to do 60-70% of the braking. Now it can't. There is a good chance that he was over his GVWR as well.
Many people tow significantly over the rating, especially over the axle and payload ratings (not necessarily the tow rating only). It's playing with fire IMO, especially if something happens.

Been towing a race car trailer almost every weekend since 94, from thw first weekend in March thru Thanksgiving. Anywhere from an open trailer behind a 1/2 ton truck to a 40ft deisel pusher motorhome with a 30 ft enclosed trailer behind it.

I've broken a weight distribution bar before. Had an overloaded enclosed trailer on the back of my 28ft motorhome, went over a bad dip to get into a gas station and it broke the ear off and it fell to the ground.

I've had the brake light fuse blow more times than I can remember with several vehicles and trailer combinations. No brake lights = no trailer brakes, always happened in the rain.

Most accidents while towing are self inflicted. Following to closely, not paying attention to the road ahead, going to fast for the conditions, overloaded trailer and so forth.

Sorry, I should have been more clear in the title. I meant broken anything while towing with the Tundra. I read a lot about people pushing the limits, people reading them the riot act and a bunch of back and forth but I am just wondering after all the verbal dust settles, has anyone actually had any breakdowns with their Tundra from towing? I am just asking since mine has nearly 100k miles on it and it still feels rock solid like the day I bought it. Every weekend I see broken down Ford, Chevy's and Dodges and I have yet to see a broken down Tundra. And I am not exaggerating just because I am a Tundra owner. I have no issues with pointing out flaws in things I buy but I have yet to find one with my Tundra.

The only thing I've broken was the Equal-i-zer WDH. It's a piece of junk and the service to get it replaced was horrible. I would get a better WDH next time around. Truck does just fine, never broken a thing in 25K of towing a 10,000lbs+ trailer.

About 105K on my truck. Been dragging boats all over for years. No problems ever and I don't use any band-aids (airbags, WD hitch, etc.). I credit it to lots of preventative maintenance on the truck/trailer and the trailers always being setup right for the boat (correct axle placement, adequate brakes, correct front to rear placement of the boat on the trailer, etc.).
