What brand antifreeze is used in the 2008 Tacoma and can it be changed?

I would assume it's the Toyota pink antifreeze that is used. Toyota has their own antifreeze which is highly recommended. I believe the straight coolant is red. If you buy it pre-mixed it's pink. It's a long life coolant and is silicate free. Using just anything off the auto parts store shelf isn't recommended, unless it's silicate free, and even then I wouldn't do it. People who go with whatever is available usually end up with leaking water pumps, etc. as the silicates can reek havoc on gaskets.

If you're doing it yourself I've heard of people buying the straight red from the dealer and use distilled water to mix it. It's cheaper than buying the premixed. Either way, most people are happy with the Toyota coolant. The biggest complaint is the price, but when you factor in how long it will last it really isn't an issue.

Of course before you do anything, check your owner's manual or the dealer to make sure the info I just gave is correct.

Kerryman71.
Thanks for the reply. I usually keep a spare jug of antifreeze in the garage, just didn't know what to purchase. From your answer it seems the dealer is the place to purchase.

Yep, stick with Toyota's SLLC. That's the most common recommendation, and the only recommendation if you're topping off the reservoir tank.
