: Bigger tires and towing... Will this work?

I'm looking into doing one of two things; either putting bigger wheels and tires on my truck with the stock suspension or doing a 3/1 level and putting bigger wheels are tires on it. Im interested in putting 275/65/20 tires on, but I don't know if it will rub or cause any problems when towing. I have a 2011 crewmax and tow an 8000lbs trailer when fully loaded...

Will I need to level the truck to make the tires fit or will the stock suspension work?
Should I not even bother since I'm towing?
Or is there a better choice of tire size for what I want?

Thanks!

I don't think the towing part will have an issue for you. If anything, it would lift your front end a bit more. Recommend the lift/leveling kit though. I put 285/60/R20 on mine with a 2.5"/1" lift/leveling kit and had a rubbing on the drivers front mudflap when turned hard left. It just needed a trim to sort it out. I tow a 6000lbs trailer, so far, all's fine. The tire size you are looking at is marginally bigger than mine. I agree with not wanting to keep the low profile look that came on the stock tires. The larger rims are nice, but beefier tires better!

Thanks Navig8r! What do you mean your front mudflap had to be trimmed? Are you talking about a piece inside the fender well, or did you have to trim the skid plate?

Has anyone else done something similar? I'm trying to keep the tires as narrow as possible so I don't have to trim anything or worry about rubbing.

In it I have pictures of what I trimmed on the lower front inner fender liner to eliminate the rubbing. I still need to work on the mud flaps. I also had to trim the front skid plate. Easily done with a cutoff wheel while the skidplate is still on the truck. Helps if you drive up on some ramps to get the front end higher off the ground. Lots of cool sparks too! :D Also, if you go with a larger tire, don't forget the Hypertech speedo recalibrator.

I tow a 2004, 26' Outback travel trailer that weighs in at 5,600 lbs. You will lose some power going to a larger tire too. At some point I plan to regear with 4.88's.

Oh, one more thing to be aware of (I wasn't) is that if you do a lift or tires or both you are fairly likely to have the VSC start acting up. Especially on freeway off-ramps. Here's a link to a thread that talks about this issue and possible resolutions (I haven't done this yet but my truck does activate the VSC at times, rather annoying): http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tundra/171569-success-vsc-lift-issue-fix-confirmed-2/

Just wanted you to be aware of some of these things, especially the regear since you tow a pretty heavy trailer. And regarding this question: "Will I need to level the truck to make the tires fit or will the stock suspension work?" For that size and weight trailer you should already have a quality weight distributing hitch and when set up correctly, it will level your truck while you tow.

On my truck, after installing the OME 3/1 lift, the front is still about an inch lower then the rear, after hooking up to our trailer and with the WD hitch adjusted, the front and rear of my truck end up within a 1/4 inch of each other.
