Hi guys, taiko here, back to discuss more audio options for the 1st gen Sequoia. Some of you may have noticed that it's been almost 2 years since I first started posting about in-dash navigation options for the Sequoia. I have spent way too much time comparing features between Alpine, Kenwood, and Pioneer (and JVC, lately), in the hopes of finding something that really impressed me. I will admit to being seriously unimpressed with all of the offerings, while some of them are nice (Alpine 910 was the best in my book so far), there are big issues with all of them IMHO. I hate Kenwood's GUI, Pioneer's NAV gets tons of complaints, Alpine can't stream bluetooth, etc. Please take my post with a large grain of salt because I don't own any of these, and it's all hearsay. I do read a copious amount of reviews though and have tested all of them at shops, and just couldn't take the plunge.
I actually recently did take a different plunge however, in the form of a 64gb ipad2. I went for the 3G version not because I plan on subscribing to a data plan for it, but because it has full GPS functionality included. I learned the hard way that wi-fi only ipads do not have GPS. I am thrilled with the $2.99 GPS app for the ipad, GPS motionX Drive. The voice commands are extremely pleasant. I am not sure if I will pay for the SIM chip subscription for a data plan for this ipad but with it the possibilities are immense.
Lots of people are installing the ipads directly into their dashes (soundman pro audio in southern california especially). I think that I may leave my stock HU in the dash, already integrated with the steering wheel and JBL amp, and just run ipad audio into it. I have a couple of questions for ipad owners using them with your Tundra or Sequoia.
First up, what mounting options are you using and what do you recommend-
Next, if I want to keep my HU, what inputs can I install to add USB/audio input functionality
Finally, if I want to keep a Toyota HU, but upgrade (plug and play) to a newer version (without a tape deck would be nice, I don't need nav...was there a HU that fits in the 1st gen Sequoia that is non-nav, but with no tape deck?) Or, will a newer Sequoia stock Toyota HU fit in the 1st gen Sequoia? I'd love to get a Toyota HU with USB/audio inputs that just slots right into the dash, same plugs etc, no need for a lengthy install.
THANKS and I hope that your 1st gens are running GREAT!
