: '07 DC Rear Shocks: SAW, Fox, Radflo...? VWTim 12-14-2011, 01:57 PM Trying to weight out my options. '07 DC Tundra. Camburg Coilovers w/ UCA's up front already.
I'll be putting in a Wheelers 3-leaf progressive pack in the back, and replacing the rear shocks shortly. Here's my options as I see them. Any comments or other recommendations would be appreciated.
SAW - 2" non-resi OE Dropiin - $550/pair
Radflo - 2" non-resi OE Drop-in - $432/pair
Fox - 2" w/ Resi OE Drop-in - $440/pair
Icon - 2.5" non-resi OE Drop-in - $588
My first though was to go SAW's to match the Camburgs. Now I'm torn between the Icon's as they're 2.5" or the Fox's as they're cheaper, although I don't like the resi locations.
Ideas? Nova_gts 12-20-2011, 07:17 PM I'm in a similar boat - no uca's, and have 1.5" rear blocks.
I was looking at the 5100's because of their price point, but decided they're just a step up from stock. It would be nice if they had the 5160's for us at a reasonable price point, but doubt that will happen any time soon. So I will begin to do my homework on the fox's as they are most reasonably priced. VWTim 12-21-2011, 10:49 AM That's about right. The 5100's are an improvement over stock, but not a whole lot. At least on my '99 Taco, they were valved a bit stiff. Swapping to Icons in the rear, really smoothed out the ride and let it handle quick bumps better.
I'm leaning towards the Icon 2.5's now....I'm still not sold on the resi location on the Foxes. Especially on the driver side. Nova_gts 12-21-2011, 05:25 PM but is it worth the extra $200?
ORW has the foxes for 210 & 10% cupon code would bring you to 378 VWTim 12-21-2011, 06:03 PM but is it worth the extra $200?

That's the whole point of my post, and my conundrum. I've ran Icon's in the past and they were valved great for my application. As to Fox, I can only find one guy running a set and he hasn't ran others to compare. Overall similar oil capacity from 2.5" vs. 2" w/ resi. Mainly for me comes down to having the cash for the Icons now, and still somewhat uncomfortable with the resi layout on the Fox's. Nova_gts 12-22-2011, 01:26 PM Well, since you have lots of experience, you could be the Guenna pig. IF you don't like them, Sell them to me! If I don't like them, I'll sell them to someone else. IF you do like them I'll order myself a pair.
I havent looked at the layout, whats wrong with the layout of resi? chance it might hit on something? VWTim 12-22-2011, 03:58 PM Well, I went back after climbing under the truck again.
So the layout I'm concerned with is that the resi on the driver side of the truck is pointing forward of the axle, more likely to get hit first. Although, I then saw how beat up and chipped the body of the Toyota Bilstein is and realized I'd rather the body be beat up than the shaft.
SO....I ordered a pair of Fox's from ORW. Also ordered a 3-leaf progressive pack from Wheelers, that should be here tomorrow and if all goes well, installed by tomorrow night. Another thing I liked is ORW offers 1 free revalve on the shocks within 30 days. Nova_gts 12-22-2011, 07:59 PM Do you expect to need a revalve in 30 days?
let me know how you like them?
I was browsing and stubmled upon the 2.0 mono tube icons (from stage 1 and 2 kits), are these just a small step up from 5100's or are they a pretty good shock also? A set only runs about 220. VWTim 12-23-2011, 05:40 PM Those 2" Icon's are a great step up from Icons. I believe they're similar to the Rear resi's they make for the 1st Gen tacos. I've been running a set of those for a few years and love them. They are not the same level of bench rebuildable as the other shocks mentioned here tho. Solid choice and a big stepup from the 5100's tho.
I don't anticipate a revalve, but seeing as I haven't found anyone online running the same spring setup as I am, I'm unsure if they'll be valved close enough. Hopefully they're good to go out of the box. Looks like the Fox's won't be here till Tuesday, so I'll throw them on next weekend.
I've got the 3-leaf progressive pack installed today. No chance to drive it yet, as we're heading to a Christmas party now. Tomorrow I'll see how it rides. I also took some rough measurements w/ and w/o (5) sandbags to see the general change in spring rate. Should prove interesting.

I am really interested and Think I am going to order a set of my own pending your review.
I was really considering the new icons 2.0 VS series. I spoke with Icon rep and they said they are a huge step up from their old 2.0 shocks. He said those were on the same level as the 5100's but the new ones are just a small step down from the big boys. Only problem is the price went up and the few places that have them all want in the 315 range for the set. At that price, I think I would rather go with the Fox's. Nova_gts 12-28-2011, 02:55 PM Oh yes, I forgot to mention, when I was speaking with a site (KLM I believe) I mentioned the resi location on the foxes, the guy told me that you should mount the resi end up, shaft down. VWTim 12-28-2011, 07:33 PM They arrived today, but I'm working 300 miles away. My fiance has them tucked safely in the garage. Hopefully I'll get them on Sat.
Good to hear on the Icon's. The ones on my Taco are supposedly made by the same factory as Edelbrock, just valved to Icon's specs. Although similar in construction to 5100's, the valving was night and day different. Looks like the new ones may indeed be rebuildable. Nova_gts 12-28-2011, 07:38 PM Correct, the new ones are made by Icon, not subbed out and they are rebuildable - according to Icon a big step up.
I really want to pull the plug and just order a set, but think it would be in my best interest to wait till you get a chance to check them out/give a review. Nova_gts 12-30-2011, 02:36 PM Can you please get these installed? the suspense is killing me.. I might just have to fly out there to do it myself! VWTim 12-31-2011, 12:38 PM Ok, they're installed and I'm very happy. Living in town, I haven't had a chance to push them yet, but I've driven down some normal roads with certain concrete breaks and other bumps and there are much better than the OEM Bilsteins. I also drove thru the park a little fast over some speed humps and the back end is so much more controlled. Overall I'm happy.
That said, I see Wheelers has the Icon 2.0's for $291, so I wouldn't discount those either if on a budget. But overall, for the price I'm happy with the Foxs.
Regarding the comment on the body location, typically you mount the body up and shaft down to keep unsprung weight down. In this instance, I think having them body down will protect them better, with the shaft down low by the tire they'd likely get beat up and damage quicker, than other trucks with the shocks more inboard.

Are they actually shorter than OEM? I'm wondering if with 1.5" block it will be stretching them a little too far? I was planning on calling fox when they reopen next week to discuss this... VWTim 12-31-2011, 06:43 PM They're so purrrty!

I didn't get a tight measurement. But they are roughtly, within 1/8", of stock. Should work great with a block. I'm running the Wheelers leaf pack that gave 3/4" of additional height. Nova_gts 01-03-2012, 04:15 PM Well I was ready to pull the plug on these after speaking to fox today, But the price of these has jumped $100 for the pair as of Jan 1 2012...
I guess I will be exploring different options or holding off even longer. VWTim 01-04-2012, 11:47 AM Lame, sounds like the Icon 2.0's may be the way to go now. Nova_gts 01-05-2012, 04:32 PM The bad news: Well, it turns out the guys at ORW were just being difficult. Even after explaining to them that I had spoken with them several times the week prior (they never mentioned a price increase) and that I just waited to speak with Fox directly and they were closed that week (I literally called back to order the shocks 1 hr after they had opened for the new year). They were unwilling to honor their old price.
The good news: the guys at Off-road engineering matched the price and I will have a nice new shinny pair of my wn next Wednesday.
Also ORE sells both the Fox's and SAWs so I asked which he would choose. He actually recommended the Foxes! | |
