: 2000 Tundra shuttering tylerdustin2008 01-03-2012, 04:23 PM Hello.
A couple months ago I bought my Tundra for $1500 off of craigslist. I got it for like $2-$3k below bluebook because they were told that it had a bad torque converter.
They diagnosed this because when driving if you came to a complete stop the truck would stall, and sometimes would not start back up.
I only experienced this twice. But when I went to get an inspection the truck failed for a hole in the frame. I dug around and found a recall... I went to Toyota got a rental and 3 weeks later I had a new frame. It has been a good 3-4 months since then. And I have not had it stall once, assuming because they flushed the trans. I was driving down the road one day and all of a sudden it starts shuttering going up hills. I check the check engine light and it says I have bad o2 sensors on the right side and that cylinder number 7 is misfiring.
I replaced both o2 sensors, found that the coil pack for 7 was cracked... Replaced it and the problem still persists except now that check engine light wont come on.
The truck is also getting pretty bad fuel mileage. Normally shutters around 2100-2400 RPMS, and does not do it as bad with overdrive off.
I have seen here and there that my problem is most likely the torque converter. But I am just going to check with you all and make sure.
And if it is the torque converter where is a good place to buy one? I would be putting a lower mileage tranny in, but I don't trust a stock torque converter.
Thank you. RobC33 01-03-2012, 07:37 PM Yeah it sounds like torque converter lock up. Its something like the teeth on the torque converter are worn out causing a shutter when the tranny needs to shift. Don't quote me on that but from experience that's what it sounds like to me. Maybe some one with more experience with our transmissions can give you a better answer. tylerdustin2008 01-03-2012, 08:26 PM Yea, I have no experience with transmissions so it wasnt quite on the top of my list as something that was wrong.... I fixed my CEL in order.
First the upstream sensor could make the downstream sensor not read. So I fixed the upstream, and didn't fix it I was like well **** I drove it too long like this and fouled the downstream.
Then I replaced it, and was like damn it it. Hoping the air fuel ratio was mixed up causing the misfire.
But I am thinking I have learned my lesson with fixing the most obvious problem first. So in retrospect, I threw away two working o2 sensors. What year is your truck? What brand O2 sensor did you replace with? Do you know what CEL code was thrown? tylerdustin2008 01-04-2012, 01:45 PM What year is your truck? What brand O2 sensor did you replace with? Do you know what CEL code was thrown?
2000 Tundra. I used Bosch universals. Don't remember the exact codes but it was bank 2 sensor 1 and 2. Then the other was a misfire code.
But I guess I fixed all electrical problems because the CEL is not coming back on.
And I like your sig. My has 253,xxx on it. Transmission still shifts just fine. Highwaylizard 01-04-2012, 02:29 PM 2000 Tundra. I used Bosch universals. Don't remember the exact codes but it was bank 2 sensor 1 and 2. Then the other was a misfire code.

Off the top of my head I ran Bosch O2 sensors in my truck and had codes within 400 miles. How long have you had the Bosch sensors installed? Malfunctioning O2 sensors can cause really bad fuel economy.
Thanks for the kudos on the signature and glad you like it.:tu: tylerdustin2008 01-04-2012, 11:31 PM Off the top of my head I ran Bosch O2 sensors in my truck and had codes within 400 miles. The upstream sensor has 500 miles on it, and the downstream has 150ish.
Its kinda bad to say this either way.. but I'm screwed both ways. I wish they were malfunctioning because then they would be the problem. But because I believe they are not it has to be the torque converter.
Because when I put the upstream sensor in, reset the CEL it was back on in about 20 miles. But I have put 150ish on the downstream and new coil pack and its not coming back on.
But under 45mph with OD off and no hills it does just fine. Accelerating on the interstate is annoying as hell, everytime I touch the gas the truck vibrates and shakes like hell. Its like someone put some self adhesive tire weights on my drive shaft. Its not the main cause of bad fuel mileage, but its up there. You go and try to overtake slowly and the damn that just starts vibrating like my girlfriends dildo so I just STOMP the gas.
But yea your sig is spot on. Older fords could get up to that mileage, but these days it has 3 rebuilds on it before it hits that. Highwaylizard 01-05-2012, 10:33 AM The upstream sensor has 500 miles on it, and the downstream has 150ish.

Yeah - that sucks. Bosch typically will not work in our trucks. Although they are probably not the sole cause of your problems they will certainly contribute to them. It sounds like you have a bad torque convertor but I am no expert in that matter. Is this something you plan on doing yourself or are you going to hire a shop to do it? Also, where did you take the truck to have it diagnosed? tylerdustin2008 01-05-2012, 02:58 PM Yeah - that sucks. Bosch typically will not work in our trucks. I will be doing the work on the truck myself, I don't trust shops. And can not justify paying them to do something I can do allot cheaper. Only thing a shop will ever do for me is tires, and inspections.
I diagnosed the truck myself. arseum 01-14-2012, 10:34 AM Didn't intend on killing the thread. I just wasn't familiar w the suspension set up. Is it for off roading or straight line type handling? What??? This thread is about apparent transmission issues.... arseum 01-14-2012, 01:45 PM Doh! Thnx Remmy. Supposed to b on the LS1 thread. That's what I get for using my phone and not reading the "fine print". Getting old Remmy700P 01-14-2012, 01:53 PM Doh! Thnx Remmy. Supposed to b on the LS1 thread. We've all done it! It won't be the last time! How you guys are able to interact with a forum on your phone is beyond me... arseum 01-14-2012, 02:12 PM I interact wrongly : ) Highwaylizard 01-14-2012, 03:35 PM We've all done it! It's really quite easy. Just ask Shatto - he does it while driving.

Shattexting Remmy700P 01-14-2012, 03:49 PM I don't even really type-text anymore. The voice recognition is so good on these Android phones that I just talk my text to it. bfunke 01-19-2012, 06:03 PM Did you consider a bad ignitor (coil). These will cause a severe stutter and vibration at acceleration. Usually but not always through a misfire and a flashing CEL light initially often followed by a steady. |
