Well, my CD changer finally broke after 11 years. I am replacing with a double din unit, but I can't get any clear information on mounting brackets. I don't know what is up with the search engine here, but "stereo" and "stereo installation" return 1 hit each. I know there must be hundreds.
Anyway, what is the most straightforward way to mount aftermarket? Reuse the brackets? Get a Metra or Scoschse kit? Any experience appreciated.
Thanks

On all my toyotas I always reused the mounting bracket, but there are filler kits that are required for some models. Check Metra's and Scosche's websites for them, but I believe the 2000 - 2002 doesn't require a filler bracket, if memory serves.
I will be doing the same to my 2002 Sequoia within the next month.

check Crutchfield.com. it should tell you what you will need to mount an aftermarket stereo.
I re-use the mounting bracket and hardwire my connections. i have the JBL system.

if you're replacing with a double-din, you should only need the stock mounting brackets to mount it. The only time you should need a scosche or metra filler is if you're installing a single-din. Even then, you reuse the stock mounting bracket. It's a fairly simple install, provided you have the correct aftermarket wiring harness to connect everything. Verify whether you have the standard or high-end stock stereo (7spkr+amp?) before ordering the Metra wiring harness, as there are 2 versions.

Not quite.
The stock JBL units are wider than a standard double-DIN head unit so you will need filler pieces on the sides to fill the gaps left behind.
You should be able to use the stock mounting brackets though.
