Does anyone know what the extra wire in the dash is for? It's taped to the back of the AC control cluster and located just where the blank button is in the dash. What was this blank designed for? This is on a platinum model with all the trimmings, so I just don't see what other option there could be.

Do you have a window break sensor on the dash (small microphone)? If not, it could be the wire for that device which connects with the horn alarm function.

Is this something that would be that low on the dash? Here are some pics. In the photos on Toyota website they show the word "Toyota" partially on the blank, whereas in the flyby, it's an actual non labelled blank. 8597985980

The extra wire is taped to the other side of the dash just behind this blank.

On my old Tacoma there section the same size as that blank that said "Toyota Security" and had a red LED when the security system was armed.

I suppose that would make sense then. This could indeed be the VIP alarm system they offer as a dealer option. Here's the details from toyota.com

VIP RS3200 Plus System. The VIP RS3200 Plus (Vehicle Intrusion Protection) is a
complete vehicle security system with alarm and glass breakage sensor for
vehicles that already have keyless entry with remote lock/unlock. When equipped
with the VIP RS3200 Plus, the vehicle’s security system is activated immediately
if the glass is broken or if forced entry of a side door (or the trunk) is
attempted. Includes a wide range of security and convenience features including:
automatic rearming and relocking, door ajar warning, interior light activation,
panic alarm, rolling code technology and disabling of the starter. • Glass
Breakage Sensor. The Glass Breakage Sensor is included in the VIP RS3200 Plus
System or can be added on to an existing factory installed theft deterrent
system.

So when this is armed that connection just flashes a red LED? I wonder if you could drill a hole in the blank, install an LED, ground one side and connect + to this connection so it looks like the VIP is installed? Do you think that wire sends out an intermittent "armed" signal that's already tied to the computer's on board security?

It looks like this?

Found a DIY for the Tundra here: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tundra/115186-diy-install-remote-start-vip-rs3200/

I'll try to remember to look at mine tomorrow because mine isn't blank there. I'm 99% sure it's for the GBS sensor to pick up sound.

The blank spot on your dash is for the GBS.

Installation is a 3 step process as described in the DIY referenced above. You need to place the GBS in the dash and plug in the wire (very easy), then there is a device which gets plugged into the ECU in the driver's side fender wall (easy but access is tight), then the dealer may need to use the Techstream computer to "turn-on" the alarm feature that is already built in your ECU if it is not already "on".

In my case, the ECU alarm feature was already turned "on" even though no VIP alarm was installed by the factory, so I did not need to go to the dealer for this. I simply bought the VIP kit from Sparks and installed it myself in about 30 minutes. There is also an adjustment which changes alarm sensitivity. Instructions are in the kit.
