Hello!
New to this forum. Like so many times before I haveinherited my wife's old car while she enjoys a new one. I know I know but Ilove my Wife when she is happy! This time however it’s not a boring econo boxor a front wheel drive sedan, it’s a 2002 Limited Sequoia! I do wish it was a4x4 but so far I am loving this car, great power, comfort and love the noisecoming from the exhaust. The seats were in bad shape and I was able to find abrand new set of factory TRD leather/suede seat covers and door inserts. Ithink these seats were originally a dealer upgrade, needless to say they lookand smell great! The jbl stereo was acting funny so I also replaced that with atouch screen Kenwood ddx418 which is a nice fit for the truck and love what itcan do with Bluetooth and Netflix when connected to the iPhone.
I do want to improve the gas mileage on the truck so Iordered the 57-9020 K&N intake. I've installed these in other cars beforeand have noticed an increase in gas mileage so I'm hoping to see some increaseshere as well. Has anybody here installed this intake on their truck?

thanks

I hope you are aware that using an oiled air filter (such as on the K&N) will require more frequent cleaning of the MAF sensor. Not a big deal really, but the oil does seem to contaminate that sensor which can really screw up how your truck runs & gas mileage also.

I was not aware. Thanks for the heads up. The part should be arriving tomorrow.

I agree. I've used the K&N in other vehicles and initially used the TRD version in my Sequoia (same oil+filter concept as the K&N).
I honestly don't think they are worth it. After a couple of marginal oil analyses with the TRD air filter (my oil had high silicon levels), I went with the then new Amsoil Ea synthetic fiber filter - and had noticeably better oil analysis after. I've never looked back.

I am about to be ordering one for my truck, Im planning on getting the 77-9020KP. Have you got it installed yet, I was curious how the fitment was?

czechm8 - So the Amsoil filter oil is a better oil to use on these filters?

No, Amsoil makes their own dry filter to use. I looked today and they appear to be out of stock on the proper part # for the Sequoia.

According to the K&N website, the 77-9020KP provides an Estimated Horsepower Gain: 10.08 HP @ 5022 RPM. That's not a very big HP gain and certainly not at the RPM where you'd normally be running. There have been numerous posts on here where guys reverted back to the stock intakes due to noise and the insignificant HP gain for the cost. Not trying to advise for or against, just providing info you may not have considered.

I have not installed it in yet. It should be arriving today and I'll try to post pictures once its in. What kind of noise have people complained about? If its more roar from the exhaust I can live with that.

Thanks for all the info

Do a search on here for aftermarket CAI (cold air intakes). There have been numerous posts about the pros & cons of various makes.

I noticed this as well today. I contacted Amsoil and they have apparently discontinued this particular air filter application. They recommend and sell the Wix 42479 for the Toyota 4.7L.

K&N, in addition to several independent testers have confirmed that a properly maintained oil filter DOES NOT contaminate the Mass Air Flow Sensor. You can check out K&Ns official response here (http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm).

On a personal note, I have been running the K&N on my 4Runner for nearly 200,000 miles without ever having any sort of issues. I do maintain it exactly as specified in the instructions. I have yet to have any malfunctions and have never had a Check Engine warning or code relating to the MAF. There was a slightly better rumble with it versus a stock paper filter, but nothing noticeable enough to warrant using the K&N. My deckplate mod and FlowMaster exhaust were the two things that changed the sound the most. I did see a slight gas mileage increase that has been sustained since I installed the filter, but you'll get huge arguments about whether changing the intakes will affect gas mileage, horsepower and torque. Take it all with a grain of salt.

I purchased and installed the K&N because it is cheaper in the long run. Mine filter was about $40 because I found it on sale at AutoZone years ago. It usually runs about $60 and the cleaning kit is about $10. The stock filters run about $20, so after 2.5 cleanings, I broke even on the expense. At regular prices, you'll break even at about 3-4 filter changes. I believe the recommended air filter change is at 20k miles, so after 60k-80k miles, you recoup your money.

I have a K&N 63 series Air Charger. For the price they charge, it feels cheap ad hell and you have to pretty much assemble it from the ground up, but does what it says it will do. It makes the engine a little louder and adds a very mild gain in power (at higher RPMs). Coupled with an exhaust or high flow muffler the sound is great! However, if you are looking for a MPG increase, I am not sure you will get it. I actually got my exhaust done first (custom magnaflow cat back by a guy here in Jax), in which sounded great and gave additional power up until about 1/2 throttle. Then for some reason, past 1/2 throttle it the power, responsiveness and noise kind of fizzled out so to speak. To me it felt like it was starved for air (best I can explain it). This was before I even started the exhaust project, and was just amplified after. So, I installed the K&N 63 series and the truck now feels like it breathes better (but still wants more, lol). The throttle is more responsive and does not drop out past 1/2 anymore (WOT is loud as powerful as hell). Even with the radio up and going 50+ mph, I can hear the intake sucking the hell out of the air (like it still would take more if it could get it). Also, because of the placement of the filter is under the hood, when it is hot outside and higher temperatures accumulate under the hood, it will not perform the way it does on cooler days.

I guess my take on this product is that for the price it feels cheap but does what it is supposed to. I have not had MAF issues but clean the MAF and throttle body every 10K miles or so. When I do clean them there is a slight noticeable difference for a short time (I figure this is the ECU re-adjusting). As for MPG, I gained about 1 MPG for the first 100 Miles or so (putting it at 17 MPG), then it went back down to around 16 MPG. So, I would not invest in this for fuel economy. So basically, go for it if you want a fun sound and a little better throttle response. But I would put MAF and throttle body cleaning in the maintenance schedule if you do (or change to a dry filter). I hope this is helpful, as I know you are looking at a 57 series, and this is based on my experience with the 63 series.

Thanks for the info again. I installed the filter today, took about an hour from start to finish. So far I like the fit and how it looks under the hood. The sound is great and throttle does feel better. Too soon to notice any mpg difference but I'll comment on that after a week or so. I will also post a picture as soon as I figure out how to do that.

Sidenote: Did you install the leather seats yourself? I was considering picking those same ones up to replace my leather.

Is that WIX 42479 from Aimsoil for use with the K&B CAI or just a stock replacement?

That may be, but I have third party oil analysis that proves it doesn't filter effectively and allows contaminants to enter the intake system. That is a much bigger concern for me than a dirty MAF sensor.

Here is the picture, I hope. So far its been good, the part fit pretty well and love the sound. I am normally a careful driver as to save some MPG but I will admit that because of the sound I do find myself hitting the gas a little more than usual.

As for the leather seats, at first I did try to install them on the 3rd row but soon realized it was going to take more skills than I have so I hired a guy to do it for me.

so this past weekend I took the truck for its first out of town trip. I drove from Bakersfield to Santa barbara and back, I used cruise control all most of the way and kept it at 65 most of the way and dropped it down to 55 while going up the grapevine. I had reset the computer before I took off and filled up the tank. The computer said I averaged 21 mpg so I still had gas in the tank when I got back in town. I just pumped gas again and I got 410 miles out of that gas tank. I will say that I let it get pretty low. I had done 400 miles before with the original air box with 95% highway miles so I really haven't been too impressed with the mpgs, I do think I'm getting a little better mpg but not what I expected. Throttle response and the sound coming from under the hood is pretty good so I am pretty pleased with the unit.
