I know I live in a pretty hot climate, but I'm really disappointed in the clearcoat on my desert sand mica paint job. The truck lives in the sun, but I never expected a Toyota paint job to deteriorate so quickly. The roof is really in bad shape and some of it seems to go below the clearcoat. I just noticed that the hood is also starting to go bad. A funny thing is that I put an ARE tonneau on when I bought it with custom paint from ARE and it's still perfect. I got a quote from a guy who usually does my painting for $1250 for just the roof. He wants to have the roof sand blasted to bare metal and I asked for the plastic strips to be replaced as well. I didn't mention the hood, but it's worse every time I look at it. We do/did wax it every 6 months or so, but apparently, that didn't help. I know the paint guy will do a perfect job and will probably bite the bullet and get him to do it. I can probably lightly sand the hood and just get that cleared.

Sorry to hear about your paint problem. You should probably also post in the Detailing section to see if anyone there has any advice on the subject. Good luck.

I'm also disappointed with my clear coat on my 06. Not to compare it with a chevy, but to compare it with a chevy, my dads chevy is twice as old and has zero scratches. Anytime i've gone anywhere near any brush my clear coat gets completely scratched and it takes me hours to buff it all out. I've personally driven my dads tahoe through some nasty stuff where i though his paint would have been shredded. But still nothing. Even my brothers 4runner has seen some brush and looks fine. I think my truck has really soft clear coat, or maybe its that it has no plastic panels like chevys and 4runners. Also think the sheet metal is softer on my drivers side. I have 3 dings on the drivers side and zero on the passenger. Beats me. Regardless, toyota for life!

Not to compare it with a chevy, but to compare it with a chevy!
:pound: Sorry, that just cracked me up. That's like when Rick James denied messing up Eddie Murphys couch, second later saying "Yeah I remember messing up his couch!" (censored for TS)

Why does he want to take it to bare metal? The factory primer is hard to beat, and unless it's flaking or peeling I would just DA the clear, wet sand, sealer coat, new base coat and clear. You got to be good, and careful, sandblasting sheet metal as it will warp from the heat pretty easy.

I haven't heard back from him in awhile. He's actually a bit independant and spends his summers in San Diego. Maybe he's just trying to avoid that part of the job? I'd actually be capable of doing the prep work, and maybe will see what other's quote to do this? I know the place that does his sandblasting would do a good job since he really does good work. I'll probably wait til the hood turns to crap before going further?
I've got a spot on my hood that bugs me. It's just a dull, hazy spot that I see right in front of me while I'm driving. Nobody else would notice it, but it's there if the light catches it right.

I have a similar situation with the clearcoat on my 2005 Tundra . The finish is nearly gone on the roof and cracking on the center of the hood.

I have the same problem as well with my 06. It has been outside since I bought it brand new. The roof is shot and the hood is fading away but the shell that came with it looks great. By the way im over here in Gilbert.

No clearcoat on Toyota white which is a P.I.A. to keep it looking good. I have to constantly polish it every few months to keep it from getting the chalked look. I feel your pain though with the failing clear on your trucks.

I usually want white vehicles, but this was the only AC on the lot. Never again, I'll take my chances polishing occasionally. Anyway, my wife like to wax vehicles, but she makes me wipe it.
