hi:
I'm new to 4WD with the shifter. the suv I had were all switch automatically,
while I shift H/N/L , do I need to stop the Sequoia?
the transmission put in park? or in N?
if I press the 4WD button on the dash. and leave the 4wd shifter in N,, then the Sequoia will run like a AWD (subaru) ?
Please give and idea. Thanks

I stop or at least drive very slowly when I press the 4WD button and leave the shifter in high. The dash display shows the 4 wheels illuminated and a blinking light in the center of them. You know it's in 4wd when the orange light stops blinking. For 4wd low I put the column shifter in neutral and then shift the floor shifter into low and then the column shifter into low.

Thanks for the reply,
also, If I leave the floor shifter in N, and press the 4WD, will the car run like the AWD drive suv in the snow?
then, when do I need to shift to H or L ??

Thanks

If your floor shifter is in neutral you won't go anywhere. 4WD is 4WD high if you leave the floor shifter in H and push the 4WD. Floor shifter in L and column shifter in D or 2 is 4WD low unlocked hubs. Floor shifter in L and column shifter in L or 1 is 4WD low locked-in hubs. For offroad hill climbing.
If you're just driving around on snowy roads you leave the floor shifter in H and press the 4WD button.
Hope that helps.

For most "normal" driving you will want to leave the floor shifter in the H position. As chippewa points out, N is just like N for the transmission and you will not go anywhere. You will likely only ever use the L4 (low-range 4WD) when "climbing steep hills, off-road driving, and hard pulling in sand or mud."

The nice thing about our vehicles is that you can shift from 2WD into 4WD (H) any time below 62 mph in a straight line. You can shift out of 4WD (H) back into 2WD at any speed. You engage the 4WD by depressing the 4WD button on the dash. Pretty much all the info you could need about the Sequoia 4WD system can be found in your owner's manual (assuming you have one) starting on page 137 (at least for the 2001 MY).

One thing that the manual does not tell you is that if you are shifting on-the-fly (as described above) you need to let off the throttle pedal just for a second or two for the 4WD to fully engage and disengage. For example, when traveling at 55 mph and it starts to pour rain I depress the 4WD button (I leave my floor shifter in H all the time) and the four tires light up green in the gauge cluster and the center circle starts flashing orange. The center diff will not stop flashing orange (thus will not engage) until after I let off the throttle pedal for a second, then it stops flashing orange and the 4WD is engaged. Same process for disengaging the 4WD.

Hope this helps.
