Is it normal to hear a clunk when the Sequoia comes out of 4WD?

I put it in 4Hi for a few miles on a loosely packed dirt road. When I came to a stop sign to go onto the main road I switched back to 2WD. As I turned onto the main road, I heard 2 loud clunks. Didn't sound good, but it's my first 4WD vehicle so I'm thinking it's normal for when the system unlocks.

It's normal when a slight load is on the drivetrain when the transition is made between 2wd and 4wd either direction.

Especially when the wheels are turned. Less noticeable when the wheels are perfectly straight. I drive the beach a lot and try to get into and out of 4WD while still on sand and not pavement.

Thanks for the replies guys. I kind of thought it was normal, but it's always reassuring to hear from others with experience. Thanks again.

Should try to switch while driving straight I believe that is what Toyota recommends but even then it is normal to hear a slight clunk sometimes.

txpackers,

you mentioned you were full stopped when you switched from 4wd. Toyota recommends you be moving while switching from 2wd to 4wd and stopped in N to switch to 4lo. does it also happen when your moving and you switch over?

also good point about weight on Drivetran above as well as straight wheels.

hope that helps
