: How to get 21 MPG at 70MPH in YOUR truck! oofy15354 07-24-2012, 02:55 PM I've been doing some highly scientific testing for a little while now and I have finally beaten my goal of 20MPG, surpassing my previous best of 19.6, and got a whopping 20.76 MPG!
Now, if HighwayLizard begs me, I will reveal the secret for all to see and benefit from :D

Something else is going on. No way this claim is true. jack mccarthy 07-25-2012, 05:45 AM Revving your truck while it's being carried at 70mph on a flatbed doesn't count. :D oofy15354 07-25-2012, 04:37 PM Without further delay, and before Remmy tracks me down and calls me an idiot in person and I'm banned from the forums, I give you...THE SECRET!

But I stand by my MPG figures and my previous best was with this same kayak last year but with the seat side up. This is my longest trip of the year (about 200 miles each way) and the only time I can really dream of 20MPG.
So Toby, be looking forward to Sept 19th and happy and safe recovery my friend! italiantundra88 07-25-2012, 06:18 PM Without further delay, and before Remmy tracks me down and calls me an idiot in person and I'm banned from the forums, I give you...THE SECRET!

i will say that there could be some truth to this. i had a recliner in the bed of my truck bringing it to my hunting camp 150 miles away. i left my tonneau cover on and it was up all the way the entire drive up there. i drove 75 the entire way there and 75 the entire way back. when i averaged my mpgs the numbers shocked the hell out of me. my previous best was 16.4 and on this trip i hit 16.4 with extra weight in the bed and the big ass sail up behind me so... im going to say plausible. fishontro 07-25-2012, 06:36 PM I think there is truth in this.
While I had stock tires on, with good tread, I drove 250 miles south on I-5. (70mph)
Upon arrival, (to buy Jeep CJ parts) I filled up and averaged 17.7.
We loaded up a CJ-7 tub in the back, a bunch of other items and made the trek home. Filled up at home and hit 21.7!!
Plus, I had NO TAILGATERS the whole way back, even on I-80 and 505! Highwaylizard 07-25-2012, 06:55 PM Classic example of the impact of aerodynamics. Very interesting case and thank you for sharing. Another example of aerodynamic mods along these lines are the tailgates of chevy trucks that have a lip to help break the drag that forms there. I think the first generation Tundra has at least a 3 MPG potential with moderate aerodynamic mods that do not change the ability to use it as a truck or affect it's looks. italiantundra88 07-25-2012, 07:07 PM Classic example of the impact of aerodynamics. so toby do you think if i did something as simple as adding something like an air damn style spoiler to the very back of tonneau cover would significantly help my mpgs. not that im going to do it but out of curiosity jack mccarthy 07-25-2012, 07:24 PM Without further delay, and before Remmy tracks me down and calls me an idiot in person and I'm banned from the forums, I give you...THE SECRET!

So I assume your going to be driving around with the kayak in the back to save on gas now huh? I'll look for you next time I'm driving down through Weymouth Landing to visit my brother & his kids.
EDIT: Nevermind; I had you confused with another member here who lives in Weymouth. I'll still be looking for that kayak your dragging around. :D SuckersWalk 07-25-2012, 09:11 PM Plus, I had NO TAILGATERS the whole way back, even on I-80 and 505!next time, find a drafting partner for even better results. :becky: toyotalover79 07-26-2012, 05:17 PM Okay - I can sort of see so all you guys that have been cruising by the house pretending to wave while giving me the finger are in trouble!

Damn I have been off of the site for a bit due to working on my MK4 and getting things ready for my wedding and I come to find out that Highway had surgery! Damn I'm glad that things turned out ok, doesn't look that bad but I can imagine that you're on some painkillers. Glad you took care of that eye problem that you had and get well soon amigo!

Not that far off, I'm from Hanover. Wish it didn't take up so much bed space or I might!
I remember some people talking about weight in the back possibly bringing MPG gains. I was thinking that maybe this creates enough downforce to give that aerodynamic advantage without adding the extra weight at lower speeds. I doubt it creates that much force but it's just a theory.
I smell scientific testing! (For real this time) tundrunk 07-26-2012, 09:23 PM This is scientific I guess living in California I should use a longboard rather than a kayak.:surf: jack mccarthy 07-27-2012, 04:53 AM Not that far off, I'm from Hanover. Okay, next time I'm at Hanover Mall when they build a Dick's Sporting Goods and you may be picking up kayak supplies; my sister lives in Scituate. :D BobbyB 07-27-2012, 05:06 AM This is scientific I guess living in California I should use a longboard rather than a kayak.:surf:
I think a better use of the bed in Cali will be filled with bikini clad chicks and the essentials for a beach weekend, just saying.. but then again I've never been to Cali. oofy15354 07-27-2012, 09:29 AM Okay, next time I'm at Hanover Mall when they build a Dick's Sporting Goods and you may be picking up kayak supplies; my sister lives in Scituate. :D
I liked it better when it was empty, that's the parking lot my dad taught me to drive in. Haha I don't even own a kayak, I vacation with family friends and bring it for them.
I work in Scituate and if she needs a new septic, tell her to give me a call :D italiantundra88 07-27-2012, 01:11 PM I liked it better when it was empty, that's the parking lot my dad taught me to drive in. Haha I don't even own a kayak, I vacation with family friends and bring it for them.

sorry to here other peoples sh!t, is your bread and butter :D Puffnstuff 07-28-2012, 01:37 PM I would think that a small wing on top of the cab to redirect the flow away from the bed would accomplish the same thing. italiantundra88 07-28-2012, 02:17 PM I would think that a small wing on top of the cab to redirect the flow away from the bed would accomplish the same thing.
or you could go all out like some of the dually guys do and but that big scope thing like the semi guys use to help make the trailer more aerodynamic tundrunk 07-28-2012, 03:27 PM I think a better use of the bed in Cali will be filled with bikini clad chicks and the essentials for a beach weekend, just saying.. but then again I've never been to Cali.
That is a very valid point! I'm only 20 minutes from Malibu and you can't fart there without some swimsuit model smelling it. Points sent for the engineering influence, this is a mod I'll work on!
sorry to here other peoples sh!t, is your bread and butter :D
I know you are joking, but there's fast money in septic replacement when you know your area and do it right. I've made as much as $20k profit (for a company) on a single job before, I ended up making a measly $3600 and some change for 6 days work. That job was a 90ft reroute of the sewer line from the house through the backyard using 4" ABS, followed by digging a big hole to set a 3,000 gallon cement tank with 3 risers to the surface, and a gravel pit full of leach line. It was a fun job even though it was hard smelly work.
I miss plumbing. shonmac 07-28-2012, 05:00 PM I still like the ladies with bikini idea. 4 or 5 top heavy ladies linedup against the tailgate would be a good aerodynamic experiment. I'm willing to sacrifice my tundra for the greater good, now just need the women volunteers. oofy15354 07-29-2012, 06:16 AM sorry to here other peoples sh!t, is your bread and butter :D
Hahaha I've been working with a plumbing buddy and with Title V inspectors for years so I've had my head in more than a few septic tanks. It makes my current company surprisingly recession proof though. As the economy crumbles, more people lose their homes and they go on the market, but all need to have the septic inspected (Title V) and many need a new one. During the good times, we do a lot of drainage, roadway, and utility projects. During the bad, we crank out 20 septic designs a week at about $3,000 a piece on top of our other projects stone cookie 07-29-2012, 08:25 AM ...Interested in hearing if the tonneau cover and snug top camper peeps find similar increases in gas mileage. kerryman71 07-29-2012, 08:52 AM We just drove up to South Portland, Maine yesterday from Central Massachusetts. Generally I drive about 68 MPH and set cruise. After about 70 miles we hit gridlock. What should've taken a little over two hours took a little over three hours. Heavy idling, stop and go and when I was finally able to drive steady, lets just say 68 MPH was out the window! After spending all day up there we drove home, leaving around 7:00pm. I won't say how fast I was driving, but to help you figure it out, I beat the original GPS arrival time by ten minutes. It was clear sailing the whole way with no stopping. My ideas of fuel efficiency were also out the window. I just wanted to get the h*ll home. I filled up before the trip and after and got 17.7 MPG. About 25 of the miles were city miles, but again, a lot of it was idling. I'm pretty happy with the end results and am confident that if the conditions were much better I would've been close to or gotten 20 MPG. I've done it before on other trips, so there's no reason to think I wouldn't have this time.

I know it's not apples to apples, but I saw a 2mpg increase on the highway adding a tonneau to my Tacoma. And then lost 2mpg when I put on General Grabber At2s... fair trade I'd say :D kerryman71 07-29-2012, 05:57 PM I still like the ladies with bikini idea. 4 or 5 top heavy ladies linedup against the tailgate would be a good aerodynamic experiment. well i posted about my experience in here with my toneau cover up all they way and driving.
but i will say that my mileage never changed. i have driven with it off and on, with no mileage change |
