: Question 305's on stock width wheels? Okay or bad idea? Kuntryboy 08-04-2012, 07:33 PM is it a bad idea to run 305's on stock width wheels? i believe the stock width 16'' alloys are 7.5'' wide. is this correct? most manufacturers say to run at least 8'' wide wheels with 305's, but do you think running them on stock wheels would be okay for the tires or do you think that the tires would wear prematurely in the center because the rims are a tad too slim?
i know it can be done, like there is no safety issue but i just wanna know if the investment in the tires would be wasted because they wouldnt be allowed to wear correctly.
lemme know what yall think.
thanks SuckersWalk 08-04-2012, 07:48 PM i'd totally disregard manufacturers' recommendations. go for it.
not! 06grnmstr 08-05-2012, 05:00 AM Kuntry....
By the way, GO TIGERS! Secondly, I have a set of 285/70/17's on my 2006 Doublecab and had to use a set of 1.25" hubcentric wheel spacers from Spidertrax in order to keep them from hitting the A-arm. I don't know the exact width on the i17" FJ wheels that I have, but they ride nice. Jimmypop 08-05-2012, 05:36 AM I believe there is a good chance they would wear poorly..especially in the center. I think they would also look a bit like balloons on those wheels. That being said, its your ride. Do what you want. :D
Did you do a Google image search?
Sent from my LAWN CHAIR using AutoGuide.Com Free App Kuntryboy 08-05-2012, 01:16 PM 06grnmstr: yea i know ill need the wheel spacers for sure. and this is gonna be our year for the tigers, if not this year, the country should fear us in 2013!
Jimmypop: thats what i was thinking.. i think the only way to run them and get good tread where is if i aired em to like 30 psi which would in turn give worse gas mileage. (not that 305's would give good mpg's anyways haha) ZapcoTundra 08-05-2012, 01:54 PM its a waste of money bud..... Kuntryboy 08-05-2012, 04:13 PM yea guess ill have to pony up 400+ for new wheels when im ready Highwaylizard 08-05-2012, 04:56 PM i'd totally disregard manufacturers' recommendations. go for it.
I have not laughed out loud like this in a long long time. Points sent. waterpig 08-05-2012, 11:44 PM I am going to go against the grain, and say its fine. I prefer a narrower wheel, they hold the bead better, and don't look stupid. I have run scads of 33 and 35x12.50s on 7 and 8" wheels, with nary an issue. The key to tire wear is adjusting the pressure for a good contact patch. Once that is done, there are no abnormal wear issues. A half inch isn't going to make enough difference to matter.
Where I will say its not a good idea is the spacers. I hate those damn things. thecayub 08-06-2012, 02:15 PM I have 305's M/t's on my stock wheels, 305/70/16. Seem to be doin fine! jaegermeister 08-06-2012, 06:42 PM I ran some on stock steel rims for a few months, (probably narrower than the alloys?) They looked a little goofy so I bought some 8" rims and it looked good and they wore pretty well too. Center wore more of course, but I got good miles off them and the mpg's weren't that bad either. Mine weren't real aggressive. You're only 1/2" less, so it might not be too bad. Kuntryboy 08-06-2012, 07:56 PM thecayub do you have any pics? thecayub 08-07-2012, 07:08 PM I dont have any on here, I will post some on here today or tomorrow, I need to do a quick write up on my rig job lift too lol.. you'll get a kick out of it just wait. Nothin a teenager and a welder cant rig.. i mean modify haha I have the mt's on the rear and I have bridgestone 285/75's on the front. click to the left on the album to see the rig job lift pics, you'll get a kick out of em trust me. Kuntryboy 08-08-2012, 08:29 PM sweet jesus. im so sorry for you and your lift. good luck with it and hope nothing breaks. but appreciate the pics of your tires. thecayub 08-08-2012, 08:59 PM hahaha I have a few things to do still. extended front brake lines, plugs for the abs sensors I do not have, and a few braces (after I install the runner diff) But I just had it aligned and it drives great, no clunks or anything, seems to be doin fine. Remmy700P 08-08-2012, 09:26 PM What the hell is going on with your rear shocks? The driver's side shock shaft is totally tweaked and there's a wierd coil running around it.... Kuntryboy 08-09-2012, 08:22 AM its not the shock itself. its like concrete metal wire that was used to extend his factory shocks thecayub 08-09-2012, 05:49 PM Yup, rebar. and I bent it so that it would clear my exhaust up towards the top. thecayub 08-19-2012, 10:43 AM ok I told you I was gonna make a brace so here ya go:

There are a bunch on there, I can't tell you how happy I've been with my 17" FJ wheels. Kuntryboy 08-19-2012, 07:53 PM are the fj's wider then the tundra's? pb4957 08-20-2012, 08:22 AM Back to the 305? I saw a member with a setup of 305/50/20 on 20x10 Helo max 6's. This with a toytec 3/1 lift. The offset for the rims is -12. I like the look and wanted to know if there was any rub? From the pics it looked like no but I reached out to him and got no reply. He might not be on here anymore. Anyone think this will be a prob? Roksh 09-14-2012, 07:36 PM I have had 2 sets of 285/65R18's on my '07 DC TRD 4x4 with the factory aluminum alloy rims and everything fits well with no rubbing, the only issue being is I have to disable the VSC if I do any freeway driving because for some reason the computer senses a false prblem and it cuts back on the power, which sucks if you're trying to pass someone... and I do occasionally feel minor body roll when following turns on the freeway at speed (65-70) personally I think wider rims would solve the problem as the sidewall is a bit too shallow... I wouldn't even attempt 305's without wider rims. Derek24 09-15-2012, 12:30 AM Guys run 35s on fj steel wheels all the time. Google 'fj steel wheels' and you'll see. You should be fine with a 305!

They also were very rouded from
the rim outward which looked funny. I went back to stock size 25K later and got my good ole Sequoia back. apimpdad 09-16-2012, 09:27 AM ok I told you I was gonna make a brace so here ya go:
