Last few weeks it felt like it was harder and harder to turn the ignition key. Finally today it won't even turn. What could be wrong? The steering is locked and gear shift. If there is nothing I can do, what does something like that cost to repair?

Got a spare key that's less used? If so, compare them to see if your regular key is just worn too much. Something similar happened to me with my older Camry, and a new key solved the problem.

I tried two other spare keys and no help. Someone suggested I take the tumbler apart and start it with a screw driver. Would this work?

get a locksmith to check into it. it wont be cheap, a couple hundred maybe, but they would have the right equipment and parts to fix it up right. it takes an experienced person about 45 mins to remove an ignition switch. just imagine if you got it out after 2 hours, the ignition switch came apart in pieces and all the waffer pins and springs went spilling everywhere. do you know anything about recoding locks? would you know enough to replace the retaining pins, etc when intalling your ig switch back in so it doesnt fall out when your driving, or worse, your steering lock malfs. think about it.
the dealer can replace the ig switch, but they wont code it to your exising key for you unless you ask them, and thats if they have a technition who can do it, or a "regular" locksmith commit.
