I've been getting pretty close to 40 mpg with my '07 CHV for both city and highway. This is as expected.
We took a trip last week with our '07 Camry (non hybrid) on a vacation trip. It's a XLE-V6 and is accessorized similarly to the CHV. I was averaging 35 mpg with peaks slightly over 36 mpg. I was rather amazed the V6 would produce shuch high mpg values.
So I was taking about a 5 mpg "hit" in fuel economy with the benefit of the V6's greater power and responsiveness. The Hybrid is a decent road car, don't get me wrong, but the XLE-V6 is a better one and not all that bad with the gas mileage either.
In short, I was very pleasently surprised.
For the sake of completeness the city mpg of the XLE-V6 has been closer to 20 mpg so in the "non trip" category the Hybrid wins hands down.
