This is a discussion thread titled "removing rear shock", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
04 DC...have that annoying squeak from the rear shock when going over a bump. I saw that there was a TSB to swap the 'hat' part of the shock. I have never removed a shock before...What do you do? Do you just take off the nut on the top part of the shock, then take off the bottom bolt? Does the suspension collapse when the shock comes off, that you need to jack it up? Do the shocks need to be compressed? Is this hard to do?
The rear leaf spring holds up the truck so dont worry about crawling under it and unbolting the shocks, however the top bolts are almost impossible to remove. I used a ratcheting end wrench and the stupid shaft of the shock just kept spinning. Now since I was replacing the shocks destroying them was an option so I took a grinder to opposite sides of the shaft until I could fit a 1/2" open end wrench on the shaft to hold it. Once you do this it is very easy to remove and replace the rear shocks. Also let me point out a ratcheting (misspelled I think) end wrench will make this job a lot easier, sorry dont remember the size.
Good Luck.

Help!
Are you absolutly positive that the shock is squeaking? Most of the squeaks come from the springs themselves. Check this out, Technical Write-Up - Squeaking Leaf Spring Fix and I hope you don't have to remove your shocks. Mine was rusted at the top so bad I had to cut the top nuts off to remove mine.

My shock bolt doesn't look too rusted, so it may come off ok. I think I have to get at it from over the rear tire, correct?
I read the write-up on the springs, and mine doesn't squeek if I jump up and down on the back bumper..just when going over bumps, and it doesn't happen every bump, just some of them.

Take off the bottom bolt first, then take off the top... I believe they use 17mm 19mm or 21mm sockets.
They will be really tight so you might need to use a leverage bar.

I may have missed this if someone said it, but the OE shocks have an allen head at the top, use an allen wrench and a rachetting wrench, the tops come right off, not a big deal. Vise grips will just damage the threads.
The fronts have a flat blade but that you use a cresent wrench, but the rears are Allen head on the top.

The 1G don't have an Allen head on top of the rear shocks. It's a flat 7 mm rod or whatever it is called.
It is a major PITA to remove the rear shock, becoz you can't hold the flat top and turn a wrench on the nut at the same time. There is very little space between the top of the shock and the truck bed.
Would be much easier if the BED was removed first !

After installing the 5100 Bilsteins rears a month or two ago, I noticed a squeak when going over bumps in the rear area. I just simply put some lube on the top of the shock towers, and the noise went away.

I could be wrong, I had the RCD bils and they had a hex head at the top. I have been confused before, this ain't the first time.
