I want to put manual hubs on my "new" 4WD 2000 Tundra Limited but I don't intend to lift it or do a lot of extreme offroading. I read an article @ OffRoad .com ( Replacing Toyota Auto Hubs - Trucks 4x4 @ Off-Road.com )that said the hubs were just a bolt on. Is this only for older trucks? The truck is currently all stock except nerf bars.
I contacted a local toyota dealer's parts department about buying hubs and they told me they were not available even as a dealer option.
If the only way to do this is to change the axle, bearings, cv joint etc.. It appears from all the posts that ORS has the best conversion out there. Any comments?
Yes, ORS has the complete kit. You need new half shafts but retain the inner CVs and then everything changes from the Inner CV outward. ORS provides all this in their kit. I had the ORS kit on my 00. I had no complaints.
So there is no way to do this without changing the axle and outer CV Joint? Are those new outer CV joints available anywhere besides ORS? I'm guessing they are no longer "stock".
Downey has a kit but the ORS kit is more complete.
No there is no other way other than getting a kit from ORS or Downey. Toyota does not provide any OE parts for Tundras to convert to manual hubs and to my knowledge the previous years Tacos do not fit.
Does this kit give you new center caps so you can run stock wheels. I want to do this but dont want to give up my daily driver look. You would think with gas prices and mpg wars this would be a factory item.
My plan is to procure two knuckles, replace the upper ball joint and pre-assemble the "new" ORS manual hub knuckle prior to taking my truck apart. The lift I'm using and the press are not co-located so I'm spending an extra $150 for a couple od used knuckles. I plan on using a hole saw to cut out the center of the plastic wheel covers for the front.
