This is a discussion thread titled "Problems with RCD and axle (REAR)", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ever since the RCD install on my 06 dbl cab 2wd I have had clunking noises from the rear of my Tundra. Started out with the notorious clunk when letting off the brakes then another clunk when gassing it from a light. Well now the problem has got a lot worse. It is making a clunking noise from somewhere in the rear.
I had my buddy look under the truck with my stop and go trying to simulate the noise and all he could look at was the amount the rear axle would wrap up when gassing it. So of course we switched position so I could see for myself and all I can say is DAYUM! That axle moves tremendously and I think this may be part of my problem. I know with having blocks in the rear especially a 4'' adds to the wrapping so I am wanting to do something about it. I was searching traction/ladder bars on the forum and a few people have them. It looks like a surefire way to eliminate the wrapping problem. I read they are around $550 or so for the RCD kit which is what I may be leaning towards. I do not want fabrication done on such a new truck that is mainly a pavement pounder.
Is this RCD the kit for me? Anyone have any comments on the whole situation I am having? Also where is a good place to order the kit from if I decide to go that route? Any info would be ever so appreciated considering it feels like my truck is just gonna leave me stranded somewhere with something in the driveline busted. Also, I have already checked all bolts in the rear section of the truck to see if anything was loose and its not. Thanks guys!
budbuilt also makes a traction bar which is around the same price, do a search and theres a couple threads on it.... too tired/lazy atm to do it
here's a pix of the budbuilt...but i forgot how much they want for it...if you go back a few pages and search we talked about it and i remember finding the price.

Whats the price range on new leaf packs??? Just a guestamite.
Also, you really think by just getting new leafs could cure the problem. I mean it sounds like the blocks could be the culprite and besides i never had the problem until the blocks were installed but not many other people with the same mods complain about my problems. Like I said I dont dogg it and it stays on the rd 90 percent of the time.
Full pack runs 500+ depending on what you want, where you live, and the price of steel.
It will help, definitely. Think of the block like the shaft of a wrench. The longer the shaft, the more torque you can generate at the point of rotation. It's sort of like that. Using a new leaf pack makes that torque arm shorter. Going spring-under almost solves the problem entirely.
Alcan was $550.00 w/out shipping back when I ordered mine. I don't think the prices have gone up much since then though. New spring pack and that got rid of the axle wrap. You don't need trac-bars with new springs.
Alcan can also build to suit what you do. I had mine set up for towing so they were heavier than OEM but they still rode great.
I had the RCD trac-bars also and just didn't like that I had to add something else rather than just get new springs.
Tom at Alcan is really helpful and I recommend them all the time.

I see on their website that you have to get different perches for the springs since they are longer? Which would mean having to weld on the new perch??? I was hoping for a bolt on kit. I need to e-mail them for a price.
I have the Alcans also. They are stock spring rate with a 4.5" lift built into them. They are work great and end up around the same as a budbuilt, they are just a safer way to do things IMO.
No mods had to be made to the perches. There is just more of an arch in the spring.

Are you talking about Alcan?
If so, not true, they will make a bolt on spring pack for your truck. No welding, grinding, drilling, just jack, stands and wrenches and that's it.

Alright, lil update. Called Alcan today and ordered up a pair of 4'' lifted springs with stock load capabilities since I do hardly any towing. Was $275 each side + shipping + there u bolts since my stock ones are MIA. I am praying to the Tundra gods that this fixes my axle wrapping problem because I am having to be flat broke for a while in order to get these things. He says they take around 2-3 wks to be produces and then shipped out.
Will post back the results when installed. Bye bye blocks. Thanks again guys.
Lil update. Springs came in and I installed them. Install went great very easy everything lined up perfectly.
As far as the problems with the axle and clunking etc... all those problems are gone. No more clunks when letting off the brake at stop lights no more clunk when accelerating from a dead spot. Also I had a problem when hitting the brakes hard the driveshaft would actually come foward and rub on the carrier bearing bracket and make a screeching sound....that noise is now a thing of the past as well. It even rides 100% better as far as pot holes and other divits in the road.
I highly recommend these Alcan springs. The 4'' makes the truck sit perfectly level. Any questions feel free to PM. Thanks again guys.
