Suspension & AxleTechnical discussions regarding alignment, stock and modified suspensions, lift kits, axles, hub conversions, gearing and steering.
This is a discussion thread titled "Ordered Total Chaos bushings.....now what?", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just ordered the Total Chaos steering bushing replacement set earlier today because I've noticed my truck hasn't been handling as good over bumps, especially at interstate speeds.
Basically, I get a lot of feedback in the steering column and the whole truck tends to go over bumps and bridge/road seams kind of sideways, if that makes any sense. It's kind of the same sensation you would expect if you aired your tires up to 45-50psi.
Here's my question: is there anything else I should do? My truck has 152,xxx miles so it wouldn't surprise me if some other bushings may need to be replaced.
I have Bilstein HDs on my truck with about 40k miles and a Hellwig bar in the back.
With 150K miles and a lot of feedback I'd actually suspect your alignment is out. With a near perfect alignment and sloppy bushings on my truck (also at about 150K when they were swapped to the Chaos polys), I didn't have enough feedback and the truck actually felt like it was wandering over rollers even though I wasn't providing any steering input. Really creepy feeling.
It's worth doing the bushings anyway, then read DJ's posts on alignment and go find a good shop for the work. Should solve all your troubles.
If you're going to replace the steering rack bushings, you may as well do the Wheeler's anti-sway kit bushing replacement also. You won't really be adding much labor to the current bushing replacement. TC Poly Steering Rack Bushings & Wheeler's Anti-Sway Kit installed
