This is a discussion thread titled "HELP! my rear is gone tunv8 lim sl dif", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I need help!
In the last 3 miles my rear feels as if it's going to fall out around turns. I am not a mech. but am mech. inclined. I could really use an exploded view of a rear diff for my 2000 tundra trd off road lim slip. Does anyone know of any sites or books where I could get some how to's?
Also my truck is @ 79,124 w/ a new stock toy trans @ 65k per waranty repair.
Hope this helps! As far as the limited slip, disregard the pinion and side gears that go into the diff case. The limited slip replaces the open diff case and it's internals.
THANKS!!
That does help but after some calling around I found a new diff for $450 but I have to verify if I have 4:10 or what a dealers tells me at 3:91 gears. 3:91 runs $500-$600 est.
I pulled the diff. oil drain plug and found a healthy tooth. Does the tooth fairy leave money under the drive way?
Looks like it'll cost $800-$1000 to tow and replace if I get the diff my self

You can find used gears on here or on other toyota boards for cheap, maybe for $50-$75. Install will cost about $200. Unless you find a used/new(as you already have) diff then, it's just plug and play. Install is real easy.
Do you have 2WD or 4WD? If you have 2WD, don't worry about the gear ratio. You definitely have to match the front diff if you are 4WD.
4wd w/ trd offroad but it'll cost $280 for about 4hrs at an all toy shop.
I'm going to tow it over to the shop in the morning where they will verify the gearing which I hope is 4:10 or just a simple gear swap.

You're truck has 3.91 gears if it's a 2000. And if you have 4 wheel drive, as already mentioned you need to make sure they put the correct gears in the rear. Try looking at local salvage yards for any 2000-2006 Access Cab Tundra with a V-8....those should all have 3.91's gears in the rear. Double cabs have 4.10's.

It's all done. The local salvage yards don't have ANY Toyota trucks at all in town. I used a local mech to install called "TOYOMASTERS" who were kick ***. They charged me $423 to replace the guts/ 3rd member. DownTown Imports (salvage) ordered a 391 dif out of Pueblo Co. for $550.
When I seen the spider gears OUCH! The guy has been working on Toys since '83 and has never seen one do that before, ever.
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hit me up if your ever in Albuquerque NM
