Default Coilovers

I was wondering if anyone has gone with Downey Off Road for their coilovers? If so Why? I heard that upper control arm are really not necessary. I want to be able to go fast in the desert (Barstow) but im not going to get to knarly. Any suggestions would help. P.S. I have spacers and want them off pronto. If anyone has some used aftermarket coilovers i am interested... Thanx....

If it's fast you're interested in, look at Camburg. Assume you will be paying between 800-1500 for a complete mid-travel setup, including coilovers and uniball upper control arms. In your case, the arms would be a good investment, as they (along with the correct coilover) will provide several inches more suspension travel.

Icon provides a similar setup...look at those two manufacturers. Both make their own upper control arms (or at least Icon used to...still might). Icon's coilovers are made by Edelbrock. Camburg's coilovers are made by Swayaway. Both are top shelf and will suffice for what you're looking to do.

Icon coilover are not made by Edelbrock. Actually they use to be Donahoe Racing, but now is ICON Venicle Dynamics. Look at Total Chaos Fabrication for the UCA's. If you choose this setup you will also need the 1” differential drop down spacer intended to reduce the inner CV angle 2.5 degrees on the 4wd Tundra when aftermarket spacer or coil over lifts are installed. This inexpensive upgrade will add extra life to the factory inner CV boots

Thanx guys. I live a stones throw away from Camburg. Are the Camburg UCA all the same? The reason why I ask is because i would love to have the long travel kit (not the extreme one) one day. If i purchase the UCA can i use any brand coilover set ups? Can i install everything at different times. Like install coilovers tomorrow, then next week put UCA on, then in a month or two install LCA? Given i will align each time. Should i stick to all one brand? TC, Camburg, Icon, and Downey are Local Companies that i will be working with. What are the pros and con's of each? I know this was a lrge question but anything will help.

Well aware of the name change.

Maybe it was just the old coilovers and the rear shocks that are manufactured by Edelbrock. Point I was trying to make is that they are very high quality shocks, with more technical support and industry backing than might be apparent from a small company that recently went through some upheaval. The owners are well established in the industry, and so are the parts...and the point was similar with Camburg using SAW coilovers. Either way, you're getting a product with a long history and good reputation, tuned by some of the best people in the business.

Sorry but I gotta completely disagree on the recommendation for the Total Chaos arms. OP has a 1st-gen Tundra, I used to run those same arms, and while the arms themselves are very high quality pieces, the misalignment angle on the uniball adapter they use will bind at hard full compression with low-profile bump stops, and binds sooner on droop than the Camburg adapter, meaning shorter shocks or limit straps to protect the spindle. The Camburg joint angles farther in the same uniball, so there's no need to be concerned about the spindle at either extreme. I sold the old arms to a buddy, but only on the condition he buy the Camburg adapter to run with them. Also there's no need for a 4130 arm...DOM 1018/1020/etc is fine, and it's less expensive.

Long travel arms are physically longer, joint to pivot, than stock arms...so are the shocks, since the motion ratio is closer to 1:1 with the long arms. If you are thinking about getting a long travel kit in the future, don't buy anything now as you'll replace your entire setup later. If that's not the case, you can get the Camburg arms now & install them, and get coilovers later. You'll probably want 650# (if you're usually running an empty truck) or 700# (if the truck is usually loaded) coils on a 2.5" body. I recommend you call Camburg and talk to them.

Icon coilovers will work just fine with Camburg arms, too, depending on whether you like red or black .

Sounds good. What im going to do is buy coilovers and thats it. After that i will save enough to buy the whole long travel kit and replace the front suspension. Thanks for the insight.
