Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
Just as title says....I have a appointment this upcoming Monday for the 4.88 rear gear install on my 2006 Dbl cab 2wd. Ive had the parts for about a year now and have been putting it off because of the $500 installation price. The main reason I was wanting to put them in is to save my tranny from premature failure because of the 35's. Main question is, is it a must to have the gears with 35's even if its a street queen and dont hardly ever tow? The power is still "OK" with the 35's just not the best. Thanks, Eurobro.
Re: Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
It definitely is not a necessary. However, if you want your powerband to return to near stock, it's highly recommended.
Another suggestion to help save on the cost, is to look for a used one. For $500, you can get a used one with 4.88's and possibly a traction system already installed. All you'd need to do is swap out the 3rd members. You'll then have a stock spare.
Seriously, check pirate4x4.com, ttora.com for members selling a 8.4" (aka 8.25" or 210mm diff) third with 4.88's to save. $500 sounds a bit steep. If all else and you go through with the install. Look for a different shop, this should only cost about $400 max. If you are capable of removing the third member yourself, bring that in by itself. Along with the gears and install kit to be installed. Doing this should only cost $200.

Well I already have the gears and master install sitting in my room for the past year or so. $475 does sound pretty steep for install price IMO but this place that is doing it is like the best of the best in my area (hear nothing but excellent things about them.)
As far as returning to stock powerband....it would be nice but worth $500 for install right now??? ummmm not really. Im mainly doing it to save the life of my tranny and rear end with all the extra added stress turning the larger diameter tire. Im going to check that website out though. Would premature tranny probs occur without installing them throughout my Tundra's life span?

Re: Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
That's a normal cost for a gear install for one diff.
As for premature wear. Yes, absolutely it will wear out prematurely. The true question is "what mileage will be premature?" Who knows. It could be a 300,000 mile lifespan and it prematurely wore out at 250,000 miles...
No one that I have met, seen or talked with had a tranny go out prematurely because of a larger tire install on a Tundra. But, that doesn't mean it hasn't happened either.
If you are stressing about spending the cash, then don't do it. Wait for another year when you have the scratch and put them in then.
Do you drive 100,000 miles a year??? If you are avg 15-20k miles per year, it's not going to kill anything.
Re: Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
Yeah that's what I kinda figured too. But now that im thinking about it, down the road im prob going to want to do a 3'' BL and 37's so I might as well do it. Thanks for the input guys.
Re: Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
Update on gear situation. I got the 4.88's installed. Got about 140 miles on the rear end so far. I can tell a slight increase in power but still am taking it easy for another couple hundred miles to ensure proper break in. It's nice not having to hit the OD button everytime I wanna drive around now. Can't wait to give it some pedal and really feel the difference. Thanks again guys.
Re: Got a appt for gear install Monday..is it neccasay?
Ok got about 350 miles on the break in period (good enough IMO) finally romped on it and yes...big difference. It feels like its got some gonads again.

Do you have a speedometer recalibrator hooked up? If yes then keep your foot out of it and you may see it go up. If no then get one, it will make a difference.
