Default Need Help Odering Gears

Hey guys,

I have spent a good amount of time reading about this and I just want to make sure I am ordering the correct gears. I just put 33" Mudders on my 2002 Tundra 4X4. Towing is terrible so I want to remedy it with new 4.56 gears.

I am looking at Motive Gears. I need 7.5 inch for my FRONT and 8 inch for the REAR, right?
The website I am looking at (AccuAutoParts) has two choices listed for my 8 Inch rear. One says non-TRD and the other says PUSH BUTTON LOCKER. My Tundy is TRD, but what does the push button locker mean, is that what I need?

Is Motive a good brand? Chime in if you have any advice. Thanks.

7.5" front is correct. For the rear, you want to get the 8" (aka 8.4" or 210mm). Never used motive gear. I've used precision gear (precisiongear.com) with no issues. Also use their install kits. Our ring and pinion is pretty much the same as the tacos for the same year.

The push button locker (aka e-locker) is only available for tacos.

Thanks for the info. So you recommend the precision gears. The gears I see on that website says 7.5" reverse (190mm). Is that what I need?

What is this "reverse" gearing all about. How do I know if my gears are reverse cut or not. I want to order my front end gears but I'm confused about this reverse cut gears. Thanks.

Reverse cut means the sprial pattern of the gear is opposite of a standard cut. The rear gears are designed as a standard cut (rotation). The front is Reverse cut (rotation) and is used mainly in front end applications. This is to allow the ring and pinion to be turning (moving forward) on the drive side of the teeth, rather than the coast side.

So, the front of the tundra is is a reverse cut.

This may help a bit as well:

Very Cool. Thanks for clearing that up for for me. So I ordered the rear gears and I am going to order the fronts today. If I am having a shop do the install, do I need to buy the Master Install kits? One retailer quoted me $230 just for the front Master Install kit? And $180 for the rear. OUCH!!!! Thanks again.

If you buy it at the shop that is doing the install, ask how much they charge. Otherwise, shop around and/or check with some of the Tundra supporters/advertisers. You can usually get a deal as a package deal.
