This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra's with LSD from the factory", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hi I am looking online at some tundra's and would like to know if there is a way to tell if it has an LSD by looking at the vin number. I know the 2003 models with the TRD package have them, what about 2002 models?
All the dealers around here know what I want when I ask, yet none know if their vehicles have it. Is there an easy way to find out without having to go down to the lot and endure a sales pitch?

Yep I've got an 02 2WD V8 with LSD. I believe LSD was available on 2WD models for the first time in 02.

The TRD package is not a guarantee you have LSD as they are separate options. See this recent thread:
Granted, most trucks with the TRD option probably (?) have LSD, but you don't know this for certain. LSD was added as an option for the first time in 2001. See the thread above for how to tell if you have it (look at the rear differential for a "LSD" sticker or tell the dealer to and then verify it when you check out the truck for a test drive.)
Seee-ya,
Jim.

The TRD tundra is 2 different kinds-----A TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road, The TRD Sport gives you LSD standard with that package but this package is for the step-side which I've only seen here in the Southeast. Your local dealer may have their inventory online and you could double check to see it that way if you dont want to risk any salesperson

I agree Jim. My 03 has a LSD and TRD but the LSD is a seperate option.

Evidently the dealers either don't know to look, or don't list it as an option, they have most of the usual stuff, but no limited slip. I have looked at about 15, and called most of the dealers. No luck.
Even said find me one, and well no luck there either. I guess I am going to have to endure a sales pitch to find out.
I have an 02 tundra with TRD and no LSD. I actually didn't know they offered them until getting onto this site. I am also not sure if I would have gotten it too. I only got the TRD package because I struck a deal at the dealer to give me that package for the price of the tundra without it! I put up a good fight and they eventually took off 3700, so I was a happy camper! Love this truck!
I've got an 04 without LSD i bought it off the showroom floor after trying to find a different truck. Now i will have to add it myself bummer on the extra cost now.
My other truck 1989 toyota pickup i was able to find out which rearend it had from the vin number. I don't know if that still aplies to todays trucks but it might.
The limited slip differential is stanard on all 04 4x4 models, and 2wd Access and double cab models. The only model that does not have the Lsd is the reg cab 2wd truck.
LSD has been an option since late '01 models. Only available on V8's.

Conventional LSD differentials require a lubricant additive especially formulated for LSD type differentials. This is because the friction plates will chatter and wear rapidly without it. Because of this all factory diffs I have seen that are LSD have a sticker indicating they are and require the special lube. Becuase some LSDs are after market installed they may not be indicated as such as is the case with my truck. Therefore I must always remind service personel it is in fact an LSD.
hate to beat a dead horse but if you have a "TRD" package which one? The TRD sport is standard with LSD. TRD off road is not standard, it then becomes a factory option. Now this is in the southeast all the TRD sport packages have it as part of that package it may differ region to region, I dunno!

I just ordered a 2004 4X4 AC Tundra w/ TRD Off-Road. The LSD was a OPTION from the factory ($227.00). It is neither a Port Installed Option from SET nor Standard on a 4X4. I believe it is STANDARD on the 4X2 TRD Sport Package.
