New member here, with a question. I have two Toyotas, an Avalon XLS, and my 6 week old Tundra. My question relates to the ABS system. For example, on an icy street in the Avalon, the ABS activates with a light humming sound and the characteristic brake pulsing, all as expected. However, the first time the Tundra activated (on a snowy forest road), the mechanical buzzing and general noise was alarmingly loud. The ABS did 'work' as expected, but I would generally think that the indications on the two Toyotas would be similar rather than a completely different experience. For the record, my wife drives a PT Cruiser, and it, too, is relatively quiet when the ABS activates. Before I head for the dealership with a warranty request, I'd like to hear about any other Tundra's ABS indications.
Thanks
Klint

Welcome!
Yesterday, I heard/felt my 05 AC's ABS for the first time. Yowwwzaaa. The pedal pulsed as normal, but the sounds were like metal on metal. Not at all like my 04 DCs or any other ABS vehicles I've driven for that matter. Did you ever hear anything from your warranty complaint? Any other members have any insight on this? All replies are appreciated.
Oh, if it matters....the brakes really locked up hard, the roads were real sloppy.

Well, it seems your ABS experience was similar to mine. It worked but sure got your attention, and what's up with that NOISE? I haven't been to the dealership yet; I was waiting to see if I had any response to my post. Chance of some rain turning to ice tomorrow night, so that'd be ideal to head out and experiment.
My Tundra doesn't have ABS but our 03 Camry does. It makes a lot of noise when it engages. Sounds like a high frequency vibration type noise. We just got the car this summer so neither of us had any experience with ABS. I tested it early this week after a freezing rain so I'd know what to expect. I didn't expect it to be so noisy but it did it's job. I took my wife along later in the day so she'd know what to expect and not panic if she were driving when they engaged.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???
Some people should not be allowed access to tools without books!!!
I pulled the plug on my ABS just before our first snow storm. I've never been a fan of any ABS system. Any good driver can stop a car twice as fast without ABS, especially in winter conditions.
It's more of a hazard than anything in my opinion.
I had the same feeling about ABS and always complimented myself about remaining calm and cool under emergency conditions. Two years ago one dark snowy winter night I had a deer come onto the divided highway right in front of me as I was cruising along at 65 MPH. As I turned the wheel to avoid it (experts say it's better/safer to just hit the sucker) I applied the brakes harder than I should have, realized it, backed off, then shot sideways down the road when the steering took over. I missed the deer and did eventually gain control and could smell hot rubber in the Maxima SE I was driving. All of this was over in seconds but it did make me rethink about my pompous pride that I was capable of dealing with every situation that can occur behind the wheel. I'm sure some people are capable of dealing with an emergency with the proper reaction but you'll never know for sure till it happens to you.

My '02 ABS activation is relatively loud, but no louder than my '94 Dodge Ram was. I just took it for granted that this was "the cost of doing business" and never gave it a second thought. Anytime it's had to come on, it's done the job, no problems.

A misconception. The ABS brake system can pump the brake faster than you can pump it manually. And plus you can steer the vehicle still without having the wheels all locked up without ABS.
