Suspension & AxleTechnical discussions regarding alignment, stock and modified suspensions, lift kits, axles, hub conversions, gearing and steering.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra shakes/vibrates", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have had my 2000 Tundra in the tire shop the last two days. I really want to get rid of some or all of the Tundra "shake". The truck will shake at speeds from 45mph to 65mph. After an alignment the yesterday.Today the tires were re-balanced.During the test drive on a newly paved road, you could really feel it through the steering wheel and the whole truck would shake. It was brought back to the shop and was raised to put the truck off the ground. It was put in 4wheel drive and at 30mph you could see and feel the whole truck shaking. One guy thinks it is a front bent wheel, but a second opinion says the shakes seems to be a tire balance issue. Tomorrow a set of wheels and tires that run smooth off of one of the mechanics truck. If it still shakes than the tires will balanced on the truck.
I've looked at drivelines (looked straight) ,3 different sets of tires. It has the fabtech coilovers and the 1" diff drop in the front.
Anyone had similar problems? I'm not trying to get a smooth car ride ,but I hate to shake like it has been.
I have a similar shake/vibration around 45-50mph. I haven't investigated it yet but I assumed it was due to the balancing of my tires or the wheel adapters I have installed. I have saw coilovers set to 3", 1" diff drop spacer, and 1.5" AAL in the rear, 1.5 wheel adapters and 285/75R16 BFG ATKOs on stock 16" wheels. Please post how you situation turns out.
Mine really shook before I changed my lower ball joints. Now it is gone. I didn't do anything else at the time and it drives fine now. Check your balljoints.

It shouldn't be hard to determine if it is the wheel that is bent. All they have to do is put it on the balancer and watch it roll. A low speed wobble is usually a bent wheel or a bad tire. In addition to that if it were bent or the tire was in such bad of shape that you felt it at 30mph, you would have a smiley face of weights on the wheel. The other easy way to see if it is something with the wheel or tire is to rotate it to the back.
My '95 Tacoma shakes like hell at speed too! In my case though, it's the damn tires. They're "cupped" so damned bad, the truck shakes like it's about to vibrate into little pieces. I keep looking behind me in the road, expecting to see pieces of the truck laying in the road!
In my case, the tire shop couldn't even "true" the wheels, because there's not enough tread left on the tires! There's nothing that can be done... except... a new set of tires!!!
I haven't read in this thread, that the tire shop you're working with, has even thought about the possiblity of the tires being cupped. I'd either ask them about that, or find another tire shop!

A few weeks ago,had the tires balanced on the truck. You could really see how much the body shakes when you would spin each tire on the truck. After balancing each tire, the truck rides much better.
But,there is still a little bit of shaking around 40 mph. I plan on changing ball joints soon.I think that might help.

285's are way to wide to be mounted on a 7" wheel...meaning they're not going to wear right or properly seat right....as a result a vibration is more than expected.
