This is a discussion thread titled "knocking noise rear axle over bumps etc.", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
i brought my truck into the toyota shop for my state inspection, they said they took the drums off to see the rear brake pad wear, said i was good for about another 40k miles or so. i got 104k on my tundra already. now i have a problem with an occasional rattle/knock coming from the rear of my truck, especially if the bump the suspension absorbs is not straight on, i also noticed the knock (metal on metal) when taking a tight turn out of the parking lot. my rear shocks seem to be absorbing fine and are tightly in place, rear leafs are not broken. when i grab the rear tire and push and pull it i can simulate the knock and it sounds like its coming from the brake drum, this happens on both sides. can anyone help me out on what the problem may be, thnks

hi, rochester toyota carged me $74.00 dollars and told me that this a common and normal noise to come from the rear axle. supposedly this is due to the way toyota built their rear axles. i guess it was odd that i had never noticed this problem for 5 years and 104,000 miles before. toyta is seriously taking a turn for the worse in my opinion. their service shops stink.
