Default Replacing ball joints

Hey guys.

How hard is it to replace upper and lower ball joints. I have the instructions from the toyota manual, but I am curious if there are any tough parts of the job. In particular, based on the manual it looks like you definitly need some special tools for replacement and install of the uppers. Also, do you really need to remove the knuckle from the truck to do the job.

Thanks

the uppers are more difficult than the lowers but both are preety simple with the use of the right tools. you will need a ball joint press (you can rent one at the auto parts store) a big honkin hammer, or an air chisle. a pickle fork can be a help but is not 100% ness. and yes it is easier to remove the whole knuckle to get the job done right.

the lower is also under recall so let the dealer do that one.

on a side note, have you considered going ahead and upgradeing the upper ball joint to a uniball instead of the weak factory unit?

I have thought about the upgrade, but given the $$ difference between a 30.00 OEM replacement and TC or Camburg UCA it seems like you could buy a lot of ball joints. I rarely take the truck offroad except on the beach so it is tough to justify.

How hard it it to remove the knucke? I know you just remove the grease cap, then the nut but when you re-install isn't there a trick? Also, what would you say the "right tools" are? Did you actually get the toyota special service tools?
