Default steering rack bushing install

did a search.. couldnt find in install guide. just bought the totach chaos steering rack bushings... wanted to know what was involved.

had a shop tell me that they had to remove the rack, press some bushings and rebleed the system. wheelers said i could be done on the vehicle, but possible press. i have seen a post that someone did it in 30 minutes.

just want to know whats invloved.. so i can decide if im going to pay or do it myself.

I can not open this link? I'm about to do this job and could use some info. My Hayes book once again fails to be helpful. Anyone else have a link or knowledge on job difficulty?

Thanks

David

I seen it did not take you but an hour-n-a-half. Any advice for a first timer? I'm mechanically inclined, just never tried this one before.

It is pretty easy except for one of the bushings as I recall. The writeup that the link used to take you to was excellent. I printed it out and have it at home somewhere. I will see if I can find it and give you the tips on the one difficult bushing.

The only difficult part is the middle bushing. Here is the recommendation on how to do it.

Remove all the bolts required to replace the steering gear bushings.

Loosen the bolt holding the steering knuckle to the splined attachment point on the steering rack. This helps when pushing on/moving the steering rack. DO NOT COMPLETELY DISCONNECT THE STEERING RACK AND THE SPLINED ATTACHMENT POINT, JUST LOOSEN SO IT CAN SLIDE ON THE SPLINED SHAFT.

Push the entire steering rack towards the back and away from the cross member enough to remove and replace the center bushing.

Remove the old and install the new center bushing (2 halves + metal tube) WITHOUT INSTALLING ITS BOLT.

Remove the old and install the new drivers side bushing (2 halves + metal tube + washer) and hand tighten that bolt.

Remove the large grommet bushing on the passenger side WITHOUT INSTALLING THE NEW GROMMET.

Line up the hole of the center bushing then insert and thread its bolt without fully tightening.

Using something for leverage, pry the steering rack away form the cross member far enough to squeeze the new grommet bushing into place. I used a wooden handled hammer for this. The grommet went in easier than I thought it would which was helped by the lube. I first pushed the rack far enough away to insert the handle, then further leveraged the rack away with the handle.

Attach the grommet bracket and thread both bolts without fully tightening.

Torque all steering rack bolts to the specs and in the order shown in the shop manual.

Requirements:

The front wheels MUST be off the ground to allow them to turn when the steering rack is moved. If this isn't done, moving the rack which is necessary for the install will be VERY DIFFICULT.

The driver's side bushing has a thicker lip than the original and the passenger side grommet bushing is also thicker than the original. This combination pushes both ends of the rack away from the cross member while the center bushing is in effect, pulling in causing the center bushing bolt installation problem. Solutions to this are grinding the tube that runs through the crossmember for the left bushing, or simply torquing down the driver's side and passenger side bushings which causes the center bushing hole to line up properly.

The new center bushing doesn't seem to fit tightly. The design of the attachment point on the cross member for this bushing is the cause of this. No amount of torque on its bolt will put any compression on the bushing.

It may be easier to remove the old stock bushings from the driver's side and the center location if the flared lips are cut off, although this is not necessary to remove them.

WD-40 seemed to help in removing the original stock bushings.

Don't forget to grease the new bushings.

Total Toe may be changed enough to require a new alignment. It would be a prudent precaution to have the alignment checked after replacing the bushings.

Sorry I have no way of including the pictures that were part of the original thread. I hope the text description helps you.
