Suspension & AxleTechnical discussions regarding alignment, stock and modified suspensions, lift kits, axles, hub conversions, gearing and steering.
This is a discussion thread titled "LSD install", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Can someone provide me the instructions or where to get the TRD instructions for their LSD I got one and have a buddy that is a mechanic I just need the paper for some added assurance thanks!
1. Prop rear axle on jack stands and remove tires.
2. Disconnect drive shaft
3. Remove fill plug, then remove drain plug and drain fluid.
4. Disconnect ebrake cable from each end of housing.
5. Remove the 4 bolts at the back of brake drum that is holding the axle shaft and brake assembly to the housing. (you may need to disconnect the brake fluid line to pull the assembly out further to remove 3rd member)
6. Remove the 10 bolts holding the 3rd member to housing and break the FIPG seal. You may need to use a jack and lift the pinion side of the 3rd member a little to break the seal.
7. Remove third member, this is where you'll need to decide if you want to disconnect the brake fluid line to remove the 3rd member. Down side if you disconnect, you'll have to bleed your brake system. Down side if you don't, your brake lines will be bent out of shape.
8. Once removed, remove the 4 carrier bearing bolts. Two pairs of hands help or use a table vise or impact gun.
9. Once the carrier is out, you can remove the 10 ring gear bolts. Again, 2 pairs of hands help or table vise or impact gun.
10. Install the ring gear onto the TRD LSD.
11(A). If you plan, on reusing your old carrier bearings and shims, be sure to keep each shim and carrier bearing on the same side they were originally on the stock carrier. I've heard the TRD unit is practically identical to the stock and the contact pattern may be a match.
11(B). Optimally, you'd want to get a master install kit that replaces the carrier bearings and pinion bearings. It also comes with a bunch of shims to get the right contact pattern of the pinion and ring gear. If you friend has the tools and know how to do it, that's a plus for you. Alos, if you plan on going with a different gearset, this would be the time to replace also. If your 4WD, your friend is going to have extra work to complete the front end.
Footnote: You need a press to remove and install the carrier bearings.
12. Reinstall everything back in reverse order.
13. Refill the diff with drain fluid.
14. Bleed the brakes if you ended up disconnecting the brake line.
If you need pics of each step, I believe I have them. Let me know.
Very helpful thanks for the reply. Pictures might help too, I'm trying to get one now that is fully assembled already, it has the carrier, gears and all put togather. I guess a guy had it on his 04 TRD and did not like the whine on decelleration from 50 mph. The thing isn't even broken in it only has like 300 miles on it!

If it had a whine on decel then it wasnt put together correctly and that whine even if re assebled correctly will NOT go away. I have built many diffs and when set-up propely they do not whine AT ALL.
ONCE YOU WEAR A PATTERN IN THE GEARS, YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET RID OF IT.
Pm me and Give me your name & e-mail address and I will send you the TRD LSD instructions.
