I use a long extension to gentle tap the new one back into place.
Then reassemble everything.
Doesnt take but 15-20 minutes, but I have a hoist
My part came in, so now I'm trying to follow these directions, but have a question, where on the steering column did you disconnect it from the steering rack? at the four bolts right above the oil lines? Mine are all rusted, hitting them with WD-40 to soak now... then you must take the spline bolt off too, to get the seal off? It doesn't look like it'll go over the bracket for the steering rack.

Thought I'd resurrect an old thread. Had this part for over a month, just this weekend got around to changing it out. Pretty easy following the above instructions and Mustangs picture and advice on getting the boot off the shaft. Hardest part was not mentioned in instructions though. The part about beating the crap out of the old seal to get it off. Not much room inside the cab to get a hammer on the old seal and it took so much force that it began to deform the old seal.
Got the new one in and you guys are 100% right. The ticking I used to hear on hard acceleration is gone. All I hear now is the rumble from the muffler. Best $16 I spent in a while.
edit: A side note. When I got the old boot off, the inner part was still stuck to the shaft. It seems that they used grease when they put it on at the factory, and over time the grease became like glue and held the boot which then created the tear. I cleaned the shaft so all old gunk was off it then just put the new boot on. Then from the inside and outside, I sprayed it with the Berrymans Silicone spray I picked up at Toyota. Is this what you guys would suggest? Did anyone use grease when putting on the new boot?
/Mike

Re: Engine noise filtering through torn steering shaft boot?
i know this thread pertains to the guys with rcd/tuff country/body lift, but what if your truck is SAS'd. I dont have a seal at all and there is a lot of noise coming through there. does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I have never seen a SAS's truck that close so forgive the dumb questions.
How and /or where does your steering shaft come thru the firewall?
Can you take a picture of it so we can see? I dont understand how your steering connects thru the firewall and a picture may help me figure something for you. I want to see why the factory seal wont work.
Thanks

i will have to take a picture of it a little later, but pretty much the shaft comes out straight through the firewall. a hole was made for it to come out and go to the steering box, but i will get some pics of it later

Re: Engine noise filtering through torn steering shaft boot?
got some pics for ya
this is how it was done, about a 1/4" rubber mat about 9" by 7" was placed over the hole with a hole in the rubber, and one of those gray pvc insulator tubes put on the steering shaft
Re: Engine noise filtering through torn steering shaft boot?
Thanks, but I will have to look tonight.
I am at work and they have a FIREWALL, so the pics and PHOTOBUCKET do not work here.
Stupid censorship

Re: Engine noise filtering through torn steering shaft boot?
couldn't you lay a bead off silicon sealer around the hole on the inside and out

where you drew the red line is not really where the problem is, its where the shaft actually goes through the rubber mat. there is still a small void, about 1/8" to 1/4" around the shaft....

Gotcha
How about some sort of a CV boot over the shaft and secured to the rubber piece or the firewall.
Let me think about it for a while. I just got back from a funeral and my head isn't in the game tonight.
Maybe someone else has some better ideas.
What did JJC and Ted DO on their SAS's. I have seen TEDS (TMS2U)'s truck, but really didnt look at the steering shaft thru the firewall, so I dont remember.

My local indy wouldn't touch it. I'm sick of the noise, and it's not budging for me. He said the 2 bolts on the steering shaft were rusted on so bad, they ended up having to cut them off, and put new one's in. But, it does sound so much better now! Thank goodness it's fixed finally!
