I just found this thread...ran outside to check...and sure enough, the boot is shredded. I'll post a pic later. Looks like another item on the 'To Do' list.

Just finished replacing mine. It was pretty easy and is so much quieter now. The torques for the bolt on the slip joint and the bolt on the bottom of the intermediate shaft are 26 ft-lb in case anyone needs that.

Another happy camper!!! I can't believe how quiet my '01 after changing a $7.22 boot. I would have sworn I had an exhaust manifold leak. It took less than 30 min. Be sure to mark the steering shafts and be sure to seatbelt the steering wheel. I put silicone grease on the steering shaft and boot. It looked like the OEM grease had dried up and made the boot stick to the steering shaft which of course will make it rip. If you have a ticking or puffing noise only on acceleration, you owe it to yourself to look at your steering boot!

Sorry to reopen the thread but what do you all mean by "seatbelt" the steering wheel?

Thanks

There is a coiled cable inside the steering wheel that makes connection to the airbag. It has to be balance with a certain number of turns of slack in each direction the wheel turns.

This instruction is to keep the steering wheel from spinning and possibly getting the coiled cable too short on one direction of turning.

You will be disconnection the steering column underneath the car and this is a safety precaution to keep things lined up.

Center the steering wheel and wheels. Take the seat belt and run it through the bottom on the steering wheel and click it in its receptacle. Then pull the seatbelt all the way out so it starts clicking when it retracts. Make it retract until the slack is taken out of the belt. This will keep the wheel from turning when you disconnect it below.

Good Luck! You will love the new quiet

Thanks guys! The parts manager I ordered mine from said he'd never sold one before, go figure. Im doing the boot and replacing the manifold/02 sensor together. Hopefully will be quiet and I'll finally be able to enjoy the truck. Just did the front and rear brake tsb's so the two major annoyances brakes, and noise should be gone.
