This is a discussion thread titled "Rear end blown..", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Well i guess my truck has finally failed me. I was lining up at a light and suddenly there was a terrible sequence of clicks coming from the rear of the truck, then all of a sudden Drive was useless!!!! It was hilarius since the truck is under a used-car warranty but it is not funny that I will end up with another open rear end. The truck is a stock peg leg and I'd ovbiously rather get the LSD installed than another POS open rear. Is there anyway to make it look like the truck had an LSD, or a way to get one installed instead?
Anyone else have rear end issues before? What generally happens when the open is blown? I'm not sure what all is broken. Thanks guys!

Is it a Toyota used "car" warranty? If so, obviously take it back and talk to them about replacing the 3rd member with an LSD. There may be an additional charge, but it sounds like it would be worth it to you. The spider gears in the rear diff are the weak link. Have you had your truck looked at yet?

Same thing happened to me about 6 months ago (84,000 miles). I was driving to class, hit a bump, heard a loud pop and horrible metal on metal grinding. Had the truck towed to the dealership. After the tech determined it was the rear differential, he opened it up to find teeth missing from the main gears, and large chunks of metal laying in the bottom of the differential.
Didn't have a warranty, so to get a brand new rear diff installed, it was over $2,400.
Now I have issues in cooler weather with having to rev the engine in order to move which is either the rear diff again, or the tranny. Taking the truck in later this week to get it checked out.
I'm a little late to this thread but hoping for some opinions. 2000 taco,V6, TRD. About a month or less of howling from the rear diff and the dealer diagnosed it as needing a new 3rd member. $2250.00
If this is a weak link, any recommendations on an upgrade or aftermarket solution? I'm not concerned so much about keeping the electric locker but still want at least an LSD. Thanks?

For that price you can get a better traction system. Contact MarlinCrawler.com or Inchwormgear.com for your options.

I agree 100% with Mike...
Look for a non-TRD Tacoma 3rd member, or the 3rd from any 1st-gen Tundra, and have an autolocker or an ARB installed.
