This is a discussion thread titled "TRD coils vs. bilstein 5100 coilovers?", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have an '03 AC 4wd TRD, and I'm trying to decide between replacing the TRD springs with a set of bilstein 5100 coilovers and keeping the TRD springs and going with the new 5100 adjustable preload shocks. As far as I can tell, either option will give me an adjustable lift up to around 2", both are based on the same 5100 shock, and only difference is that I'd either keep or replace the TRD springs with the bilstein ones. Not many places stock the new adjustable shocks yet, but they seem to be around $80 each vs. $650 for the coilover set.
Does anyone have any idea how the 5100 coilovers compare with the TRD springs (stiffer/looser/other differences)? I haven't been able to find that particular question addressed here.
What are those adjustable preload shocks you're talking about? Are those 5100? Do you have any partnumbers and/or location where to buy? I would be interested.
Here's a link to bilstein's page: http://www.bilstein.com/offroad.php#5100pre. If you click on the "application search," that'll give you a part number. It's new, though, so not many places have it listed yet. I found a couple by googling the part number, and they were listed at $79 each.

Wow, not bad. Are they listed for the DC as well? Wonder what the valving is like?

The adjustable preload 5100 is not available yet. I was planning on going this route but my patience ran out so I ordered the 2.5" swayaway's this morning.
I called bilstein last Friday (6/9/06) and spoke to Shane in the offroad department and he told me that they are still in the process of building the shock and it may be available late June or early July but I wouldn't count on it because every time I called to check availability for the last 3 months the release date kept being changed every time I called. Anyhow, he sounded very iffy on it being available by the end of the month. I was told that these will work on the DC and will provide 1 extra inch of travel.

Still to come: custom dash kit, JBA headers, exhaust, and eventually custom paint. And whatever else looks appealing!
I have run a set of adjustable Bilstein coilovers for the last 30k. I have had to adjust the the ride height once (due to settling) and tried to do it a second time but the wrenches bent. The ride was not nearly as stiff as I had hoped although they are stiffer than the TRD springs. Bilstein listed the coils at 625 lbs. Downey-offroad has a pair of springs rated at 800lbs and I wished I would have gone that way! The big difference is that the bilsteins are progressive while the Downey's are not. The 110lbs or so that my winch weighs was not overcome by the stiffer bilsteins, live and learn!
Just bought a 03 Tundra AC 2X and it has 2 1/2 adjustable coilovers on the front. They have an "ad" logo on the side and I can't make out exactly what brand that means. I don't know whether they ride stiffer than standard bilstein TRD's or what since I'm new to Tundras. They ride very firm and I love it. I would like to find out whether these are good shocks, ride stiff or soft, etc. , any help out there?
I've had the preload adjustable 5100 Bilstiens on my 2005 DC 4x4 for about 5 months and love them. I noticed no change in my ride quality. They boosted my height by nearly 3" in the front and I used the 1" bolcks in the rear with my stock TRD Bilstiens shocks. I am about to put a 6" RCD lift in next week so I wil have a slightly used set of 5100's for sale if anyone is interested.
