Suspension & AxleTechnical discussions regarding alignment, stock and modified suspensions, lift kits, axles, hub conversions, gearing and steering.
This is a discussion thread titled "2wd V6 lift and tire clearance questions", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've started my search for a clean, 2wd, 5 speed, regular cab Tundra. This will be my daily driver, but of course, I won't be able to leave it stock, which means I want to lift it.
I did some searching here, but didn't find what I'm looking for. So here are my questions--
1. If the 2wd and 4wd front suspension the same? I've seen lifts advertised that fit both. Is that so?
2. To run a 33" tire, how much lift is needed? I want to use this truck in the desert, but don't have the money to go long-travel.
3. What gearing should I go to for 33's and the 5 speed?
4. Lastly, can I stuff a Lock-Rite in the rear axle?
Thank for any help you can give me! Oh yeah, if you've got pics of something like what I want, please post them!

Well I have a non-lifted 2000 4x4 tundra with 265/75/r16 which are supposedly comparable to 32 inch tires. And I was told by a local off-roading dealer that I could easily run 285/70/r16s, which are supposedly comparable to 33 inch tires without any lift or modification to the fender or wheel well. However since my tundra is 4x4 it is obviously a little higher that a 2x4 would be stock. So to answer your question, my guess would be that a 2" lift or so should give you enough clearance for 33's

How's it going here are some answers to your questions.
1. OEM suspensions are different i.e. spring hieghts and rates and shocks are different for a stock 2wd compared to a stock 4wd. However all suspension parts are interchangeable. A 4wd coil-over and leaf springs will fit a 2wd and vice-a-versa.
2. Some People run 33's on stock rims(barely clear the stock upper control arm) but most need at least a 2" lift to clear wheel well especially that pesky pinch weld.
3. Not sure on that one I think the 5 speed comes with 4.30's try it out first and see if you lose to much power, but I think that 4.56's would be pretty good.
4. I have the PowerTrax No-Slip locker and was fairly easy to install. The no-slip is the quieter version of the Lock-Rite.
I know there is alot to read out there but try a search you will find a lot of useful info out on these boards.
Oh, yeah check out SocalTundras.com most of us there enjoy beating our trucks up in the desert. We hang out there were it is more off road oriented.

Just a little tid bit...the 5 speed comes with 4.10 gears. I really wouldnt worry about changing gears especially with 2 wheel drive.
