Suspension & AxleTechnical discussions regarding alignment, stock and modified suspensions, lift kits, axles, hub conversions, gearing and steering.
This is a discussion thread titled "My front suspension creaks when cycling...", within the Suspension & Axle forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My setup includes Camburg/Teamwest coilovers, and Total Chaos UCA's.
When going over, for example, speed bumps, I got a loud creak from my front suspension.
The creak is similar to the steretypical bed-creaking noise, but louder.
The truck has been to the dealership for something unrelated, but they didn't say anything about the creaking. It is very common and noticeable.
Any ideas?????
Hrrrm, dealership didn't notice it? Or they did but just didn't want to open the can of aftermarket worms?
I just had a similar thing, every time the suspension cycled it was a loud creak, up and down creak-creak-creak. Can it be easily reproduced if you jump up and down on the bumper? If so, lay under it while a friend (preferably a large one) jumps up and down on the bumper until you can pinpoint the noise. I was surprised to find out in my case, that one of my Fox shocks had gone bad. I couldn't see a leak or anything, but the piston gave up the ghost and as the suspension compressed you could hear it groaning. Sometimes you will also find this sort of noise to be related to a bad bushing, shock top plate, or other part. Let us know what you find out.
Upgrades: PA 3" Body Lift, Powertrax No-Slip rear, Detroit ezLocker front, Fabtech/Fox front, Wheeler's AALs, TC Front Diff Drop, 16 x 8 MB Wheels, 285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs, Pioneer Head Unit, Infiniti Reference speakers [front and rear], 150 W bridged amp to bandpass enclosure, 6 CD changer with IR remote, iPod mini and xm hardwired into stereo, Toyota drop in bedliner, and Tonneau cover
I would also recommend lubing the uniball with triflo. I have to wipe the dirt out and spray mine every week or so to get rid of the noise. Also how installed your UCAs? You might want to loosen the top bolt that holds the UCA to the frame and retorque it to specified Nm. do it with the vehicle at rest height. Sometimes people will tighten up that bolt with the vehicle in the air, then when its at normal ride hide the bushing is already under tension/twisting.
I had a similar sound coming from the front suspension after about 30k. I had my Fox shocks rebuilt (it probably needed it anyway) and the sound went away. I suspected a shock had gone bad because the suspension started to feel a bit spongy on top of the creaking sound.
I just had a mean sqeek for a week & 1/2, and after all the blaming my tc steering rack bushings, and it ended up being the lower heim on the coilover...lol
After a hard day of wheeling(trailriding and some mud), my truck started making the creaking. I just washed and lubed my uniballs and rinsed off the d'hoes. voila good as new no more squeaking/creaking.

I had a squeak up front that I finally identified as the hood latch mechanism by walking beside it as a friend slowly drove it over a ranch road. When we opened the hood and repeated the drive, the squeak went away. We then sprayed some white grease on the mechanism and that cured the problem. Now I routinely respray the mechanism and no longer get the squeak.
My creaking turned out to be the metal sleeve inside the bushings on my Camburg COs had corroded themselves to the UCA bolt. I have some pics of what happened and what I had to do to fix it. Addign grease fittings to my UCAs really helped. Hopefully the other suggestions will take care of it, but if not it could be a larger problem.
