Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
I got Camburg front and had the 5100's in the back and it did fine but I needed more so I made a custom mount in the back and installed fox 2.0 external resevoirs. I have been offroading with the 5100's and I never had a problem except for bottoming out when flying off a jump but hey what do you expect? got upgrades right away. I defineltly don't have that problem now.
By the way i got those 5100's for sale, they were on my truck for about 6 months. Just the rears, so if anyone interested make a reasonable offer.
Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
It's actually nice to hear that someone's really putting the bilstein 5100s to the test richdoja. I'm not planning on doing any jumping but I'm glad to know they can take some real abuse. I've been buying parts and am finally going to put them all on this week. After reading everything I could on TS about lifting, tires, and wheels, I've decided to go with the bilstein 5100 adjustables at the second groove down from the top, TC diff. drop kit, the steering rack bushing kit from offroadwarehouse, 285x75 R16 BFG ATs, I'm keeping stock wheels but am going to use 1.5" wheel adapters (hub & wheel centric) from wheeladapter.com. All this comes in around $1300. Not too bad. I'm not sure what, if anything I'll do with the rear suspension yet. I've had a few lifted trucks but this is the first I've modified myself so there'll be lots of before and after pics, measurements, etc. I'm going to the Sierras in a couple weeks so I'll let you all know how the shocks do on and off road. Now I just gotta get my defiant light bar...

Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
I have 5100's on the rear with about 11,000 miles. One of them is shot and the other isn't far behind - it clunks really badly at anything more than a medium sized bump. And it's leaking oil really bad. I find this kind of strange - I've heard nothing but good reviews on them. My DR's in the front still run like new, so the Bilstein's are pretty dissapointing. Maybe I got some lemons.
Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
climberpm, the extra width of the 9" wide wheel is why there are no rubbing problems even though it has the same 4.5" BS as the 7.5" wide wheel. Let's say you're using a tire with a width of 275mm or 10.82".
With the 7.5" wide wheel, the tire would stick out past the edge of the wheels by 1.66" on each side, giving a total BS of 6.16".

Thanks Bai Qui!!
That was really bugging me. It seemed like it had to have something to do with the wheel size but I could not make sense of it. Thanks for spelling it out so clearly!

Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
Been reading this post, just bought a 02 Tundra V8 4wd SR5 AC w/ 122K miles. My 99 Taco frame rooted and Yota gave me a good check/
Tundra has a 2" spacer on top of suspension front o truck, bad angle on axles and possibly leaking CV boots. needs front struts/shocks all around/carrier bearing/exhaust. brought to mechanic friend and got assessment and examined on lift with him. Since like looks of leveled truck, and needs suspension work anyhow, based on reading posts here is my thoughts below. PLEASE critique!!
Sees beach sand 4wd in summer, winter in VT, some off roading light though, lots of on road, towing small boat.
-Borla Exhaust
-17x9 wheels/rims and 285/70/17 tires no backspaceer needed is plan.
-RIMS??? Tbd.AR maybe? anyone have prefs keeping in mind beach 4wd.
-Bridgestone AT Revos had em before great tires.
-Bilstein 5100 rear
-Bilstein 5100 front- 2nd setting top
-TC diff drop
-CV boots from www.offroadsolutions.com/products/tundras_drivetrain.htm
-skid plates from http://www.skidplates.com/Products_Tundra.asp
-TC Steering Rack Bushings
-AAL either wheeler 1.5" (not daystar)or deaver 1"?
Have to figure out some decent rims that can take sand...what do y'all think? I gotta spend the money anyhow on suspension and budgeted for it due to truck condition on purchase...
Would you do it different?
Thanks!!

5100 rear
deaver aal

Have the 5100s on the Tundra and Tacoma. They are awesome! The Tacoma is set up with 5100s and set on the middle (3rd) row with a revtek spacer on top of the shock (Nicole has the Shrockworks bumper which brought the front end down slightly). Also have a 1.5" block in the rear. The Tacoma is perfectly level and rides great, also perfect alignment. Diff drop not installed yet but have not had any issues with CVs for 1000 miles.
The Tundra now has 5100s set to the 4th ring along with a 1" spacer on top. My Camberg upper control arms should be here tomorrow so I can finish the front. The diff drop is in and the Tundra is sitting netted a 4" lift in the front. I have the 5100s in the rear with Wheeler 1.5" AAL but the rear is still low. I can lift with my airbags but it's slightly stiff so I ordered a 1.5" block to get back to the factory rake. I added the Total Chaos sway-bar bushings along with the steering bushings at the same time. I don't have any body roll even after the lift and the steering is tight!
Both trucks ride and drive amazingly better. Actually feels like a truck!
Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
In reference to the Bilstein 5100s. Which style is more preferred? The true adjustable coil over style or the strut with adjustable c-clip? Pros vs. Cons of each?
