Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
You do not need anything else in order to safely use the Bilsteins. That was the whole point of the kit, to allow a little height and a little more travel without necessitating new upper ball joints, limiting droop travel, binding the joints, or topping out the shock.
The only thing I'd recommend is for 4WD trucks, and that's 930 CV boots, CV boot clamp mod, and differential drop spacers if you feel they are warranted.
Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
Sorry, just realized you have a 2nd-gen. I'm not familiar with the Bilstein parts for the big Tundras, but if they offer one, you're probably safe in assuming it'll operate under the same premise.
Call them to be sure, anyway.
You need a complete replacement coilover if you frequently find yourself in a situation requiring more load handling capability (not capacity), or if you do a lot of hard, fast driving for long stretches of time on rough roads.
Otherwise, there is no need for anything other than the basic Bilstien kit, if they offer one for 2nd-gen Tundras.
Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
Just an update for anyone who is interested. Bilstein 5100's are absolutely fine off-road. While they are not as good as full coilovers they hold up just fine and performed great!
I spend two entire days in the dirt, mud, and on the rocks. I seriously put these to their limits and they had no issues. Lot of flexing and full stuffing to the bumps. I did have my sway bar disconnected though for better flex and it really helped. These are much better on the rocks than the stock set up with a spacer. I have done the same trails with both and these are much, much better.
And here is a good shot showing that it is OK to push the 5100's to the limit. It may be a poser shot but it did this all day long and I couldn't have been happier with them.
So if anyone ever says you can't wheel with the 5100's I'm going to smack them!

Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
If I get them when I get home, I will likely just see if whoever installs them will set it up at the highest level, drive it and see where it settles. If it looks nose up, have them drop it a notch. That is, if someone hasn't definitively answered the question by them.

If it looks too "nose up", it is easy, cheaper, and probably more desirable to lift the rear to even it out.

I'm not fond of lift blocks. Increased axle wrap and all of that stuff, especially with towing. I might end up trying air bags or the super springs that someone else mentioned, but haven't researched it that much. I'm not sure those options go with cheap and easy though.
As far as desirable, with towing and a 5'2" wife and two kids, there needs to be a balance.

I set my Bilsteins on Max, and only needed 1" blocks to even it out. You won't get any axle wrap on 1" blocks.
You could always go with AALs if blocks bother you that much.

Like cyberbilly and the rest stated you can't go wrong with These shock's . I have them on my Tundra as well with a 1.5 inch block. I did have AAL add a leaf and took them off because they ride to harsh and too truck like..
Block's would be easy to install first gen and second gen. I installed my block's myself..

Re: How about a Bilstein 5100 Adjustable shock update
Installing blocks doesn't worry me so much. While I would hope that one inch blocks wouldn't create axle wrap, I am just trying to be conservative. Tube steps will definitely end up being a priority though. Probably before any actual shocks or whatever.
I forget who it was who was talking about the super springs. I will have to track that thread down.
