If you lift the front 3 inches, you should be able to put 33s on. A differential drop kit is hightly recommended so you don't destroy your CV boots. Also, while 33s will fit, you may not be able to use the stock rims; the backspacing is too much and will cause the tires to rub. Tranny should not be a problem.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

I have 33s with Donahoes, Camburg uppers and stock wheels for over a year with no problems at all. The tires rub at full lock on frame. 285/70/17 tires work fine. 2-3 inches of lift.
New UCA's will help, new wheels with backspacing of 4" or less will help, might need to take off the mud flaps if your not lifting the front much. You can get 33"s in there without lifting with proper backspacing and some trimming.

You don't need the diff drop since your TC lift leaves the axles at a good/stock angle. But if you added coilovers or spacers and lifted the truck more that way then you would need a diff drop, and yes it's something you can do yourself.
