Hello all, i am trying to sell my durango (in classifieds) so i can buy a nice midsized-compact truck with a V6 and a double cab 4X2 Lomg Bed. So far my choices are a Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado(I5), and the Honda Ridgeline. I want to see which truck has the most bang for the buck. I am not feeling the colorado due to looks and resale value. This will be a Work truck/ Family car. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks for your help
I would stick with the Honda, Nissan or Toyota if you are in the mid sized market. But it depends on what you are going to use your truck for. I have heard that the Honda is actually quite a gas guizzler in real life driving, but it is a nice truck. If you are going to be much towing, heavy hauling or any off road adventures I would stick to the Nissan or Toyota. There is much debate to which is the better truck between the two, but I chose the Tacoma hence why I am on this site. But the Nissan is a good truck as well. When I purchased my truck I almost bought the Nissan because it has a slightly more powerful engine, but the Nissan felt cheap to me inside. I then did some research and in a comparison the Tacoma is faster in all acceleration tests including while they were loaded with 1,000 lbs of sand. The Tacoma is lighter and has lower gears in the axle(s). I tow almost 6,000 lbs with mine a couple times a month and it tows like a champ for a V6, I am sure that the Frontier would as well. I love my truck, but both are good choices.
Yea, truthfully, i dont go off roading and towing capacity is not my biggest concern. I want a nice quality interior, but also a tough truck. I own several aprtment buildings and i am constantly hauling stuff, just last week i hauled 800lb work of cabinets out of berkeley. MPG is also a plus, and i know that the Tacoma has the sadvantage there also. What kind of deals did u guys get on yur tacoma.
I like my Tacoma but I wouldn't call it a "tough" truck. Body panels are light, bed is light, tailgate is light, interior is nice but the hard surfaces aren't very durable. The light weight contributes to good mileage though. On my V6 Access cab 4x4 the mileage started out at about 18 and has improved to 21+ mpg over the first 8k miles.
I don't know much about hauling with the Honda, but I would think if you will be hauling from time to time you may want the long bed. I haul quite a bit with my Tacoma and I have the short bed with the bed extender and it is plenty long for me, last week I had a couch in the back and there was still probably 5 or 6 inches before the bed extender. But a long bed may be the way to go if you can get used to the larger size and I think it looks kind of odd behind the Double Cab. 800 lbs is a pretty decent load, if you are doing this often I would add Supersprings to either the Nissan or the Tacoma, although you wouldn't have to. The Honda is IRS so it would be a little more difficult to add some sort of helper spring (I am not sure that there is anything). All 3 are good choices. I am in the Bay Area as well (Dublin) and I bought mine from Toyota 101 and it was a pretty easy transaction, but that is mainly because my dad is the GM. I do know their salesmen are not as bad as most dealerships though, I went to Dublin Toyota twice now, once looking at the Tacoma and once to get mine serviced and both time I had a horrible expierence.
Just did extensive research on midsize truck for a second vehicle for personal use. Went with top of the line Tacoma. With the special promotion from toyota to dealer and $500 rebate, I paid a total of $700 below the dealer's invoice, which I researched on line and got the dealer to show me his copy. They also threw in the Carpeted Floor mats, full tank of gas, and hooked me up with their independent contractor for detailing and got pinstriping and body side molding at their cost. I presently own a new Avalon and have had Toyota's in the past, so I guess I am a little biased. However, the reliablility and the price were the final factors.
Yea, i started looking at ful size trucks such as the tundra. The rebates on them are very tempting. But the cost of gas is one reason why i am trying to sell my Durango. I could get a Ram, Silverado, F-150 and a tundra at the same price as a Tacoma. I dont know what to do. Also how much was the dealer willing to negociate . I havent visited a toyota dealer since 2002.

I believe if gas millage is the most important feature? Then Silverado is your ticket. They have the best MPG in the class. The only problem is they only make 1 out of 10 trucks well. So it's a roll of the dice!

I disagree... the 4 cylinder mode really only tricks epa tests. In a comparison that Trucktrend did between the Tundra and the Silverado the Tundra averaged almost 2 mpg better than the Silverado.

Really? Wow. My Silverado 5.3 V8 was getting 20 mpg. My Taco is only getting 15 mpg. My Silverado didn't have the 4 cyl. feature.
I took a long hard look at Frontiers today. LE Crew Cab LB 4WD V6 auto, XE 4cyl 2wd King Cab, and an SE 4wd V6 auto King Cab. The SE might be the one for me. All 3 dealers were willing to go down near invoice, plus there's a $1750 rebate on V6 models to top it off. The Frontier's a solid truck. Reminds me of my '03 Tacoma TRD Off road in the way it feels. Just more solid than my '05 Tacoma. Just more like how a truck should feel. I don't think I'm off base. My Tacoma is a pretty truck. I get compliments all the time, from unexpected people too. The Frontier doesn't stand out really. Just looks like a tough little truck. I'm standing on the edge with the rebate deadline looming.
My woman loves my Tacoma because of the car like comfort and looks. I'm simply disgusted with how Toyota corporation responds to legitimate problems. I'm a 20 year loyalist and they've got me looking elsewhere.

Hmm, I take your word on it. Our 03 Tahoe Z71 averaged only 16 with the 5.3. I am surprised you are getting 15 out of your Tacoma, my mpg's arent great but better than 15 average.

I agree with that... not like Toyota at all either. I hope that they get back to their old ways soon. I love my truck though and I can't complain about it riding nicer than a typical truck, but thats just me.
